NOTES FROM REEFTON.
(From Our Own CoebespgndeKt.)
Rbbpton, November 4. Walhalla.— The cleaniug-up over the trial crushing was completed to-day, and gave 340z of retorted gold from 37 tons of stone. The yield is payable, and will allo w'the tributers good wages. They have a nice little reef, and are well p/atisfied with the prospects. Globe. — There is no news from the mine today, but according to report everything looks encouraging, and the market holds firm. Welcome. — It is expected that the breakage of the main shaft will prevent crushing being resumed for a week or 10 days. Progress (late Oriental). — A meeting of shareholders is convened for Monday evening next to appoint a legal manager and decide upon the registration of the eouipauy. la the \Vaul«Mi*s Court to-day the rival applications for the old Result ground came on for hearing. The warden held that the party who pegged the ground before the notice of cancellation had been locally gazetted were not in legal occupation, and grtve the ground to tue party who pegged subsequently. The defendants have lodged notice of appeal to the Di-trict Court ("on the point'") that local gazetting was not a part of the procedure of cancellation, holding that the ground was open for occupation from the date of the publication in the Government Gazette, Wellington. The share market has beeu very lively to-day, Wealth of Nations, Nil Desporaudum, and Big River Extended being freely operated on — Nil's up to 4s ; Wealths, 6-, ; and Big Rivers, 6s 6d. Keep-it-Dark. — Tenders for thesupply of mine timber for a period of two years are invited today. '.The Alpine Company's return is 4320z amalgam from 305 tons of stone. The washing-up will take place on the 13th. Reefton, November 5. Inglewood Extended. — All shares forfeited for nou-payment of calls will be Bold by auction ©-morrow. .Globe. — There is no report through the . directors to-night, but I gather from visitors to the mine that the reef in the winze is going down strong and showing remarkably good gold. The market has been active all day ; and 17s 6d is freely offered, but sellers are scarce. Chicago. — I am informed by the promoter that from the number of applications being received, there is every prospect of the full , number of shares being subscribed. Welcome. — The hands have been discharged since the accident, but I understand they will be all put on again on Tuesday next. A new shaft for the water-wheel to replace the broken one is being fitted, and it is expected everything will be in working order early in the coming week. Mulfcum in Parvo.— This ground adjoins the Loud Star on the north, lying between the Lone Star and Chicago. Some gold-bearing stone has been found in the lease, and is believed to be the Lone Star line. South Hopeful. — A number of unalloted shares in the hands of the company will be sold by public auction at 4 p.m. to-morrow. The weather is now beautifully fine and a'number of parties have gone out to prospect on the recently acquired leases in various parts of the district. Reefton, November 6. -The following are the battery returns for the past .week :— Keep-it-Dark, 1790z of amalgam from 168 tons of stone ; Uuited Alpine, 4320z of amalgam from 309 tons of stone ; Wealth of Nations, 182oz of amalgam ; from the berdans at the Welcome, 3280z of amalgam from 45 tons ' (for thn week ending Saturday, 30th October) ; Fiery Ccoss, 2650z amalgam from 96 tons of stone (for the week ended 30th October) ; Venus, 1350z amalgam (for the week ended 30th Qctobtr). Lord. Edward. — The tenders for driving a tunnel on this company's lease at the Big River have been withdrawn, the directors haviug decided last night to put on men to trench the 'surface, so as to "locate" the reef before fixing the site pf the tunnel. . Big River Extended. — A lump of quartz from the reef, in this company's mine was brought in by the manager yesterday, and deposited in the company's office for inspection. It is surprisingly rich, being variously estimated to contain gold to the jalue of from £2 to £5 sterling. "Multum in Parvo. — This lease adjoins the Lone Star on the north, and reports reached town on Friday. night that H. Currie and Jas. Wilson had found excellent gold-bearing stone on the ground. They are confident it is the Lone Star line of reef, and the news therefore caused some little move in the shares. A meeting of shareholders was held last night, when it was decided to register the company right off. Mr H. Currie was appointed mine manager, and Mr Brennan legal manager. Lone Star. — Latest accounts from the mine are that the winze is now down 43ft from the floor of the prospectors' level, and still carries a pice compact reef 2ft thick showing the same good gold. The reef has now been proved from 63ft frqm the surface to the foot of the winze. Progress (late Oriental). — This property is now engaging attention owing to the rise in Globes. A meeting of the shareholders will be held to-morrow evening to decide upon registration and appoint a manager, &c.
Just-in-Time. — As the battery only started on Monday evening there was no scraping up of the plates to-day, but reports say the plates look quite as well, if not better, than during the last crushing. The pegging-out of leases in the Globe vicinity is, still going on. Yesterday Mr Watkins, C.E. of the' company, with others, took up a lease adjoining the north boundary of the Globe. Several new leases have also been taken up in the Lone Star direction. Globe.—The winze is now down 33ft from the floor of the excavation, and the face of the stono a& l b up to the surface, makes the total depth of atone proved 50ft. Reports from the mine to-day are that the stone now coming from tue bottom is even richer than that in the surface. As the result of this the bhares have been gradually moving up during the last two days, and are now quoted at £1 is J The town is crowded with' people to-day, and tha share excitement is very lain, even iiore tfcau at any timed.ur«ig the post fortnight.
November 7. Keep-it-Davti. — During the last month the quantity of stone reduced was 774 tons, which yielded 450^ 15dwt of gold
Globe. — The mine manager reports that the stone now coming from tho bottom of the whize is as good, if not better, than the quartz above. The witißo is being sunk in SdlM quartz witli no &ign of either wall or the reef. At a distance of 270 ft along the reef from the wiiizts the lode has been opened, and shows a thickness there of -ift 6in with first class prospects. Stone \* ill bo taken from here when the battery starters also front the winze and the original face. It is intended to start the tuune.l imrneriiately the tramway is finished. So far as can bo judged, several thousand tons of stone can bo obtained without the aid of a main shaft. If the weather continues, the tramway will be finished in about 12 days, and crubhing will be commenced.
Welcome. — The new driving shaft purchased from the Keep-it-Dark is found not to fit, and will therefore have to be sent to the Greymouth foundry. This will prevent crushing being resumed for a week or 10 days. Royal Oak. — This company is driving for the Venus line of reef, but have not yet got through the broken face of the hill. There is only a short distance to drive to cut the survey line of the lode.
Inangahua Low Level.— The tunnel is now in considerably over 2000 ft, and is still beiDg pubhed ahead in fairly progressingcountry. South Hopeful, Reform, Britannia, and the South Keep-it-Dark respectively are still continuing prospecting works, but with nothing so far for report. Inglewood. — The level is being continued at a fair rate. A share of forfeited shares took pls\c u yesterday, when they realibed 4d aud sd. Lyell Creek Extended also brought from 5d to 7d, there being purchasers for nearly every line offered, Reefton, November 8. All day to-day the town has been in an almost unprecedented state of excitement in spite of a torrent of rain, which has been falling without cessation since morning. The streets have been crowded with people, and all kinds of business except share dealing has been entirely suspended. Globes have been in gr^at favour, and Kales are reported as high as 255. The next exciting cause is the Progress (late Oriental). These shares have been gradually rising all day and up to 5 p.m. sales had been effected up to 5s and 6s. The cause of the ri.se is owing to the improved prospects of the Globe. People have been perfectly mad about the shares, and th** number of transactions in them probably exceeds anything of the kind previously. There is nothing fresh from the Globe way, the weather preventing access to the mine. I hear that Just-in-Times have also been in demand. Lone Stars remain stationary at 4s 9il. Messrs M'Callum and Cairn to-day pegged out a mining lease in the Globe line, in the vicinity of tbe Saturn and Suez leases. Eureka. — This company will resume operations in January next, and in the interval a survey will be made to fix the site of the crosscut to be starter). Owing to the flooded state of the rivers the coaches from the seaboard are unlikely to get through. Reeftov, November 9. To-day was pretty generally observed as a holiday, the banks, public offices, and leading business places being closed. This circumstance, added to the wretchedness of the weather, has I given the town a very dismal aspect. There has been no business of any kind doing in the share market, and the rivers both north and south being in full flood has prevented all communication with the outside districts, and there is consequently no news of any kind to chronicle. Globe's and Progress shares stand at last night's quotations.
NOTES FROM HOKITIKA. (From A Correspondent.) Hokitika, November 5. Ross United. — The returns for the past week were 83oz 3dwt. No work was done on Saturday last owing to a break in the supply pipe. The mine is again in full swing. Humphrey's (Jully. — This company washed down their head boxes on Tuesday last, with a result of 2030z. Sluicing has now been resumed.
