The committee of the Otago Lawn Tennis Association have decided to hold a tournament on the 30th inst. on the Carisbrook ground. Ladies' and gentlemen's singles and doubles, and combined matches will be played. The clubs belonging to the association are entitled to make four entries for each event, a fee of 2b 6d to be paid for each entry.
Fainter Bros., of Christchurch, again attempted to beat Duncan's record for a bicycle ride to Hurunui and back on Saturday, but failed, being an hour longer than Duncan was.
The Auckland Amateur Athletic Club's sports were held on Saturday in conjuction with the Waitemata Bicycle Club, when 2000 persons were present. The events were well contested. For the Five-mile Bicycle race eight started, and it was won by A. Buchanan, with Leckie second and Walker third. Time, 39min 27sec. For the Three-mile Club Bicycle race six started, and Leokie was first, with A. Stewart second and A. Buchanan third. Time, llmin 27sec. A meeting of the committee of the Otago Regatta was held on Thursday evening in the Port Chalmers Hotel, Mr E. G. Allen in the chair. It was resolved to add to the programme a fishing whaleboat sailing race. The chairman reported that Dr Roberts, who holds the Union Company's challenge cup, which was won at the last Henley Regatta, had consented to hand it over to the committee for competition in the Senior Fours Race. The committee had also arrived at a definition of those qualified to enter for the Maiden Juniors and Seniors. A sub-committee was formed to see if any im» provement could be made in the course for the rowing match.
A meeting was held in the Council Chambers, Mornington, on Tuesday, to consider the formation of a lawn tennis and bowling club. About 20 members attended, and the meeting was ad« journed for a week to see what suitable grounds could be secured.
An Auckland Press Association telegram states that the Auckland •Cricket Association resolved to play 22 against the Australians, and reconsidered the terms for tho match, offering an alternative of two-thirds of the nett proceeds.
The game played on Saturday by the Dunedin Club at Tahuna Park was, in spite of the high wind prevailing, a very enjoyable one. The respective sides were captained by T. W. Orr ami E. ceptions, above the average, and most of the members did good work in the field. In addition to those mentioned, the following are worthy of a word or two of praise— namely, Fraser, Wales (2), T. A. Watson, Martin, Sibbin, Green, Macfarlane, Ness, Stevenson, Manders, Nantes, and Moukman. In every match since the club started Captain Orr has been on the winning side, and his able defence of goal (thereby relieviug the goal keeper times out of number), his brilliant throwing, and management of placing his men to the best advantage are to be highly commended. There is still a tendency to play shinty with the ball by a few of the members, and did they know how bad it looks they certainly would discontinue the practice.
