The hard times through which the colonies are passing is pretty clearly indicated by the falling off in their trade with the Mother Country. During the first nine months of the present year merchandise to the value of £17,432,300 only was shipped to Australasia, a* compared with £19,132,700 in the corresponding period of last year. This exhibits a falling off of nearly 9 per cent. In the case of Tasmania and Western Australia there was a moderate increase. The exports to South Australia were valued at £1,241,400 against £1,782,700 in 1885. A. decrease of over 30 per cent, represents a very serious reduction in the purchasing power of the people. The colony which occupies the next least favourable position is New Zealand, which took £2,517,700 or a decrease of 13 per cent, for the year. To New South Wales and Queensland the shiprapnts for the nine months, valued at £6,834,500 and £1,661,000 repectively, exhibit a decrease of about 9 per cent., whilst the merchandise shipped to Victoria, valued at £5,127,200, was only 2 per cent, less than was exported in 1885. From a trader's point of view no doubt the diminished trade is satisfactory, because it lessens the excessive competition which unduly large stocks create ; but it nevertheless clearly shows that the people of the colonies cannot afford to buy so much as they purchased in in some of the late prosperous years. — Sydney Morning Herald. NATIONAL FIRE AND MARINE INSURANCE COMPANY.
