GORE.

November 3. — We have had a fishing trespass case here, brought by the ranger of the Southland Acclimatisation Society. The person procecuted held an Otago license, and was charged with fishing in the Otamete river in Southland. Evidence was brought forward on behalf of the defendant to show that a mutual agreement had been arrived at between the two societies to allow license-holders on each side of the Mataura to cross the river and fish in adjacent streams. A member of the Southland society upheld this contention, and stated that the arrangement had not T>een revoked. The case was, therefore, dismissed. Yet the R.M. stated that henceforth the mutual exchange should be considered at an end. Many people are concerned to know upon what authority the resident magistrate had issued euch an instruction. The concession made was a laudable one, and should be continued, as it is equally beneficial for both societies, and frequently very convenient to anglers in each district.

Mayoral Election.— Three candidates are & re< £lu m th « field-viz., Messrs Canning, MaeUibbon, and Simson. I do not suppose any more will come to the fore.

Fire Brigade.— The Queenstown fire engine, bought for the brigade by our Borough Council, has arrived, and has been given a trial. The engine is, I am informed, a good one Dairy Factory.— The plant for this institution has arrived and, will be erected forthwith, so that ere long the factory will be in full •wing. .. Horticultural Sooiett.— This society has made rapid strides, A good number of special

prizes have been handed in to the secretary, and its future promises well. Weather. — For three weeks we have had satisfactory weather, and the farmers have been enabled to complete their seed sowing. In many instances sowing has been very late. [See note at head of page.— Ed.]
