The Anglican Synod resumed its session in the Chamber of Commerce yesterday afternoon, his Lordship Bishop Nevill presiding. A CHURCH PAPER. The following report was read from the committee on the proposed church newspaper :—: — The committee are of opinion tint a periodical for the diocese should be of a character to make it of general interest to ohurchmen, apart from parochial considerations ; that such a paper might be localised in the several parishes by the insertion of a leatlet giving local church news. The committee have ascer . aiued that to produce and publish a monthly paper of eight pages, size ot Church Gazette appended, would cost £6 for 300 copies, exclusive ot postage, and about 12s for each additional lUO. The probable returns would be: — 100 copies at 3d, £1 5s ; 200 do at 2d, £1 133 4d ; a .verbisements, uncertain, probably would not exceed SA ; total, £t5 18d 4d. At thecO't of an additional Id per copy an Knglish monthly periodical coula be added as a supplement. It the circulation worn 1000, returns may be approximated thuB :— 3uO at 3d, £3 15s ; 700 at 2d, £5 ltjs 8d ; adven isements, 6ay £7; total, £16 11s Bd. The cosi, would be £10 Js. luasmuen as by accepting subscriptions the publication would be pledged for 12 mow hs, a guarautod fund of not less than £50 would be necessary. The committee are of opi ion that a paper such a< described would probably succeed if the literary management were in competent, hands. In the case ot the Church Gazette the general control is vested in the Standing Committee of the Auckland Diocese, two members of which are changed with the pr ictical management. There being many prao ical details .-set to consider, the committee recommend that they should be permitted to Bit after the session ot synod aud report to the Standing Committee, The report was adopted. FINANCE.

Mr J. Ashcroft moved in accordance with notice given : — " That the 6ynod go into committee to consider the following resolutions: 1. That this synod adopts the report of the Finance Committee, and directs that it be printed with the proceedings and referred to the Standing Committee to give effect to the recommendation contained in the second paragraph. 2. That the assessment for diocesan expenses shall be 3 per cent, on the ordinary income both in parishes and parochial districts, subject to reduction in special cases by Standing Committee.'" Rev. Mr Hampton deprecated a matter of such importance being brought forward at that late period. Mr E. C. Quick pointed out that it was necessary some action should be taken, or there would be no assessment and* the affairs of the diocese could not be carried on. Mr R. H. Leary moved that the following words be added to the resolution : " That the committee be instructed to make a recommendation as to the remuneration of the diocesan secretary." Mr Asbcroft acoepted this addition. The synod then went into committee.
