RAISING THE CABLE TARIFF.

Wellington, October 30. The Cable Company having intimated thatthe increased rates will commence on Monday next, the Government have under consideration the question of charging terminal rates for inward messages, proceeds from which will be devoted to refunding to those telegraphing from New Zealand a proportion of the cable charges. Later. The following is the cable from the chair» man of the Eastern Extension Company to Sir J. Vogel: — "October 27.— 1 have your telegram that your Government declined arbitration, notwithstanding their having obtained the sanction of Parliament for an extension of the subsidy for five years. The company have no alternative but to raise the tariff for intercolonial telegrams passing over New Zealand cable to 10s per 10 words from Ist November, in order to recoup loss of Bubsidy. I stated the whole case to the shareholders at the half-yearly meeting today, and they unanimously approved of decision to raise tariff." At a meeting of the Cabinet to-day the question was considered, and the Government have decided to impose a terminal charge on inward messages of 4s for 10 words, and 5d for every additional word. It is expected that this charge will cover the increase on outward messages. Sir Julius Vogel says: "We shall collect the same amount as at present, and trust to the increase of rates on inward messages, which the company will have to collect and be accountable to us for, to recoup the additional amount for which we shall have to be aocountable to the company."
