NOTES BY SLIP. SENIOR CUP MATCHES. CAHISBROOK V. PHCENIX. This match was concluded on Saturday last and resulted in a 65 runs victory for the latter. For the winners C. Beck, West, and C. Frith were the only players who reached the coveted "double." The former, though out of practice, somewhat still retains his characteristic defence. Levy, for Carisbrook, played an exceedingly Sood innings for his 32, deservedly carrying out is bat. Oq neither side was the trundling so deadly as that of the previous Saturday. Montgomery, for the Phoenix, though somewhat erratic at times did most execution. His style .is easy and length good, the ball gathering pace from the pitch. With improved direction and moderation in delivery, his bowling should be of great Bervice to his side. Drabble and Niven did good service behind the sticks, and also C. T. Moore at longstop. The Southerners going in first, took full advantage of the good wicket supplied by M'Lellan. Their batting all through was of a very fair order, and Johnson is to be complimented on his score of 83. He had a certain amount of luck by making uppish hits which just fell short of the fieldsmen; nevertheless he showed good form for the start of a season. The fielding and bowling of the Carisbrook was not at all up to the mark, a good number of catches being missed. At the call of time Carisbrook had lost three wickets for 39 runs. The match will be continued next Saturday at 2 o'clock sharp. Southern.— First Innings.
