THE COUNTRY.

[Correspondents will oblige bypostiny their lett crs in time to reach our office by Tuesday Night's mail in future.] At the meeting of the Clutha Parliamentary Union held last week a motion by the Rev. S. W. Currie against reporting the proceedings lapsed for want of a seconder. The adjourned debate on " Home Rule " was then proceeded with, Messrs Comerford, R. Grigor, J. L. Weir, Cork, Calvert, and Mackenzie taking part in the discussion, which was not concluded. An entertainment consisting of songs, readings, and recitations was given on Friday ovening at the schoolhouse, Waitati, in aid of the funds of the newly-established Mutual Improvement and Debating Society. The chair was occupied by Mr Day, the president of the society, and there was a good attendance notwithstanding the unfavourable weather. The chairman read au interesting paper, entitled " A Leaf from the Experiences of a Digger." The others who contributed to the evening's enter-, tainment were Messrs A. Kilpatrick, W. Pullar, Bell, Davidson, Lennan, R. and A. Hogg, and Master Mansou. The Eev. Mr Finlayson gave an address, in which he referred to the objects for which the society had been established. He wished especially to draw attention to the monthly journal, to which each member could contribute. The society (writes our Blueskin correspondent) meets every Saturday evening, and members are always glad to welcome visitors. It is intended to hold monthly meetings like that of Friday to promote general sociality. The Donstan Times records the death from diphtheria of Mr Gilbert Fowler, one of the very earliest of Clyde residents. An unoccupied four-roomed cottage at Waikiwi, near Invercargill, was burnt down on Friday. It was insured for £100 in the Victoria Insurance Company's office.
