Railways Under Construction.

Wellington, August 10.

An important return has been prepared by order of the Legislative Council as an appendix to the Select Committee's report on the Loan Schedule. It shows the present condition of the railways provided for, and the further extent to which the amounts provided in the Loans Bill ivill carry them; also the additional amounts which will be required hereafter to complete them to the extent at present contemplated. It appears that the sums set down in the Public Works Statement will carry the respective lines the following .distances : — Helensville, northward to 12th mile. Grahamstown-Te Aroha, to 17th mile.

Morrinsville-Rotorua, to 17th mile from Putarau

Napier-Palmerston to Woodville and portion of Gorge section Wellington-Woodville, to 3lßt mile from Masterton. v Blenheim-Awatere, to 9th mile from Blenheim. Greymouth-Hokitika, 15tb mile. Upper Ashburfcou, to 27th mile. Tinwald (Livingstone branch), to 12th mile. I Otngo Central, to 40th mile. Catlin's River, to lfith mile from Balclutha. • Riverßdale-Switzers, to 14th mile. Seaward Bush branch, to Bth mile from Appleby. Edendale-F..rtrose, to 12th mile from Edendale. The Ministers further required, as follows :—: —

To carry the North Auckland to Omapere, ' 98 miles, £615,000.

For the Penrose double line, £32,000. To complete line from Thames to Te Araha, 141 miles £85,000; and the line to Eotorua, 15 miles, £120,000 '.
