MAUNGATUA.
August 3. — Since writing last the weather has undergone a complete change, very little rain having been experienced during the past four weeks. The roads have consequently been in a good condition, with the exception of particular places which will remain muddy until summer.
Agricultural. — Farming operations are now being actively pushed ahead in various parts of the district, every one living in hopes of an abundant harvest and big prices next year. The sowing of wheat is being gone on with at present in some parts of the district. There is, however, a great scarcity of fodder for cattle this season. Old stacks of straw are consequently everywhere being cut into chaff at present. In some parts of the district young lambs have made their appearance. Religious. — Some short time ago the Sabbath school was reopened in Berwick, Lake Waipori, and it is at present being well attended. A series of weekly prayer meetings has also been organised. They are held every Sabbath evening and have been largely attended.
The Kimbehley Goldfields. — A meeting of persons wishing to go to Kimberley was held on Saturday evening last in Woodside schoolhouse, Mr W. M'Pherson in the chair. Mr T. C. Frazer gave some interesting particulars regarding the locality of the goldfields. Before the meeting closed a number of persons present gave in their names as being willing to form a party to proceed to Kimberley. An adjourned meeting is to be held on Wednesday evening.
