M.U.1.0.0.E.

The half-yearly Purple Lecture and Past Officers' Degree meeting of the Otago District M.U.1.0.0.F. was held at'the Manchester Unity Hall, Stuart street, on the evening of the 28th ult. The meeting was presided over by P.P.G.M. Bro. Hitchcock, assisted by Deputy Prov. G.M. Ibbotson and Prov. C.S. Black.

A letter was received from the Prov. G.M* Bro. C. J. Gore, apologising for his absence owing to unavoidable business engagements.

There was an unusually large number of Purple officers present, and also a highly satisfactory muster of candidates for the various degrees. Amongst the latter, in addition to brothers from the Dunedin and suburban lodges, were brothers from the Loyal Waitahuna, Prince of Wales (Port Chalmers), and Mosgiel lodges.

Attention was drawn to an article in a paper called the " Australasian Oddfellow" on the subject of a late amendment of the Friendly Societies Act passed by Parliament. This article reflected on themembers of some societies for opposing the passing of the amending act alluded to, and attributed motives which it was stated were utterly wide of the mark, the objections to the act having been clearly aud fully stated by the society last year. A reply to the article was drafted by Bro. Black, the Prov. C. Sec, and approved by the meeting.
