ARTHURTON.
June 21. — Our new school buildings were formally opened on the 18th inst., the ceremony taking the form of a soiree aud concert, the edibles being supplied by the ladies of the district. All having refreshed the inner man, Mr Win. Stevenson took the chair, and congratulated the residents on having secured such a fine building. He contrasted the system of education in New Zealand with that in vogue in England when he was a boy, and showed the advantages now enjoyed by children. They should not be slow to appreciate their privileges, and who could tell but that from Arthurton school some star would yet arise equal in brilliancy to a Gazzard, a Malcolm, or even a Guthrie. Mr Guthrie, the newly-appointed teacher, having been introduced by the chairman, made a feeling reference to parting with old friends and meeting with new. He wished the utmost harmony to prevail amongst them, and trusted success would crown their efforts. A lengthy and very enjoyable musical programme having been gone through, the particulars of which I need not go into, the Rev. B. F. Rothwell addressed the meeting, coufining his remarks more especially to the duties of parents to their children. In connection with their education, and giving timeous and valuable advice to all. Several other items having been rendered, the inevitable dance followed under Mr Munroe as M.C., and inspired by strains of music supplied by Messrs Baggrie and others. The proceeds I understand are considerable, and the committee are deserving of great praise for tho energy they have displayed and the improvements thoy yet anticipate accomplishing.
