The Accident to the Taupo.
, Napier, April 29.— The Taupo arrived at 2.15 this morning, and was met and accompanied to the anchorage by the steam launch Boojum, which had gone out half-an-hour before. The Taupo was brought inside and berthed at the breastwork at 9.30 a.m., and was lightened aft and put down by the head for the purpose of raising her stern so that the remains of the broken propeller blades might be removed and new ones screwed on. An inquiry into the circumstances was held this afternoon before the collector of customs. The evidence taken will be forwarded to Wellington. Reporters were not admitted. The vessel does not leak, and no plates appear to be broken, though her bottom is considerably^ bulged. As soon as two new blades are put in she will sail on her voyage, unless ordered to return to Dunedin. , Auckland, May 5. The inquiry as to tho grounding of the Taupo was held to-day bofore Mr 11. F.Anderson and Mr W. J. Moat, J.P's, and Captains Frater and iodd, nautical assesors. After hearing evidence the court* considered Captain M'Coll took all possible precautions/ considering the state of tt l e weather, and did not feel justified in dealing with his certificate. An order was made as to costs, ihe certificates of tb,e other officers were returned.
