lUAT 4. — i^uice a gioom was oast over i.no t own on Saturday, tho 24th nit., ou ib becoming kuown that the only son of an old and respected settler named Rowley had beeu drowned at the Head of Lake Wakatipu. Bros. Wilkie aud Nation, of the Oddfellows' lodge here, brought the body down from Queenstowu, and ib was buried on the 28th ulfc., the fuueral. with oue e.xeeption, being the largest over witnessed in Waikaia. The deceased was well knewn, and highly respected by everyone who knew him. Floods. — During the past week we have been almost under water. The river has "only been known to be so badly flooded on one previous . occasion — some 16 or 17 years ago. The bridges over the Argyle, Dome, and Muddy creeks have beeu washed away. Considerable damage has been done to crops stacked ou the low-lying ground. The number of rabbits killed or drowned during he flood totted up to thousands. Athenaeum. — It is expected that this institution will be opened next week. A meeting of the subscribers takes place on Saturday, when final arrangements will be made for the opening.
