FOOTBALL.

The Dunedin Club's fixture for Saturday was a Fifteen v. The Club; bub owing to the holiday s,eason the attendance was rather limited, 25 pl,»yci\-> turning up. If, was decided to adjust sides and pl.\v Association rules. Mills captaiwud the Colours, and Austin the Blues. A good hour's play was indulged in, the Colours winning by two goals (kicked by Mills aud Harper) to nil. After a five minutes' spell and s?>mtJ more players having turned vp — bringing the total to 15 a-side, — the Rugby game was resorted to. The Blues showed their superiority in this game, winning by two goals and a try to one goal (11 points to 5). Martin, for. the Blues, obtained two tries, one of which Stephenson converted into a goal. Stephenson also potted a goal in good style ; and for the ' Colours Stohr obtained a try, which Harper converted into a goal. Some very good play was shown on either side, the passing and dribbling being very fair. Players would do well to bear in mind that in passing the ball shou'd very rarely be thrown higher than the shoulder, high tossing being very dangerous < Besides those mentioned above, Austin (2), Butterworth, Turton, Turnbull, Montgomery, Mills, O. Fulton, Stokes, Stevenson, Clayton, and Fitzgerald played well. The match between the Poneke (Wellington) and East Christchurch football clubs on Lancaster Park on Saturday afternoon resulted in a win for the former by two tries to nothing. The passing and dribbling of the Wellington team were very good, and they were the heavier in the scrummages.

About 1000 poople witnessed the match between the Poneke (Wellington) and East Chnstchnrch teams on Saturday. This is the third match played between the two clubs. F. Dixon gained the hrst try, through a piece of luck, for Poneke. White&ide and Takroa made some good runs in the second spell, towards the end of which Muir gained the visitors a second try. They thus won by four points to nothing. The Times says : ." The match was rather uninteresting to look at, the play being principally confined to the forwards. Owing to the smartness of the Poneke forwards, East Christchurch had but few chances of feeding their backs, who had comparatively little to do. It was almost the same with the Poneke backs. What shows Whiteside had he made himself. He frequently left his place at half back and took up his position amongst the forwards, and it was from their midst that he made some of his best rushes. He was ably supported by Roberts, whose' kicking and general all-round play were really excellent. The forwards played grandly, and to individualise them would be unfair. Moorhouse played a splendid game until he mot with the accident which necessitated his retirement. Francis, as usual, was of the greatest assistance to his side, but Taiaroa had very few chances of doing anything. When he did get the ball he always made ground. From his play on Saturday it is evident he will not have attained anything like form until he has had another game or two. The forwards, although slow at times, proved themselves but little behind their opponents. It is evident that with more play together they will turn out an excellent combination. The Eoneke team were handsomely entertained on Saturday evening by the East Christchurch Club, aud yesterday afternoon the same club took them on an excursion to Sumner, where, after enjoying the cool sea breeze, tea was provided, and a return made to the city at 6 p.m."
