First Day — Monday. Auckland, April 26. The first day's races of the autumn meeting took place to-day at Elleivslie in splendid weather. There was great difficulty in starting, but they got away to a moderate start, of which Victory and Libeller had the best, the rest in a cluster as" they passed the stand. In the turn from the back, however, Victory put in his claim and took head of affairs;, followed in close order by Libeller and Friendship. In this order they reached the cutting, where Victory was stil! leading, and Nemesis ran into second place. On coming to the straight Wapiti came through from fourth position at a splendid pact, and taking command at the entrance to the straight, came through, and assuming a commanding lead, won on the inside in a canter by 10 lengths from Victory ; Friendship was close at hand. Time, 2ruin lsec. 1190 in the totalisator; 85 on the winner. Dividend, £12 12s. MARES' PRODUCE STAKES, Of 200sovs. Six furlongs. Mr Duder's Brigadier, by Musket—Pungawerewere, Sst 101b ... ... (Edgecombe) 3 Ricochet, Tamora, and Lady Nora also ran. Betting : 6 to 4 on the field. Reproach was the favourite in what little betting there was. After a good deal of difficulty they got away to a fair start, Howitzer being first, Reproach second, Brigadier third, and Tamora fourth. Approaching the cutting the order: was Reproach, Howitzer, and Ricochet. At the turn to the cutting Brigadier came up, and coming into the straight Brigadier and Reproach were almost together, the rest in a cluster. Brigadier led into the straight, and all came up under the whip with the exception of Ricochet, who had pulled up, having burst a bloodvessel in her head. Brigadier won easily by three lengths; Howitzer and Reproach almost head and head for second place, but it was given to Howitzer ; Tamora fourth, Lady Nora last. Time, lmin 18^sec. 1291 in the totalisator. Dividend, £5 15s. EASTER HANDICAP, Of 300sovs. One mile and three-quarters. Mr Raymond's Clogs, fist lOlly ... (Woods) 1 Mr Twohill's Cinderella, 7st 101b (A Sutherland) 2 Mr Hedge's Wapiti, 7st 31b ... ... (Kend) 3 Necklace, Tetford, Victoria, and Mystery also ran. Betting : 3to i agst Necklace, 4 to 1 Wapiti and Tetford, 5 to 1 Victoria, 6 to 1 Mystery, 7 to 1 Cinderella. From a good start Tetford cut out the running, followed through the cutting and turn into the straight by Cinderella, with Mystery last. Clogs came up in the straight, and passing the stand the order was : Tetford, Clogs, Cinderella, Victoria, Armourer, Wapiti, and Necklace. At the back of the course Armourer ran into third place, but shortly after Victoria cut him out. Approaching the cutting Wapiti improved his position, and on emerging from the dip Wapiti was on terms with Clogs, who had come to the front. Coming through to the home turn Clogs, with her light weight, took the lead and won hands down by three lengths from Cinderella, who had at last outpaced Wapiti, who finished a good third ; Victoria fourth, Necklace fifth. Time, 3min B&sc. 1745 £1 tickets on totalisator; 178 on the winner. Dividend — £8 16s. HURDLE RACE HANDICAP, Of 100 bovb. Two miles and a-qunHor. Mr Duder's Belle, 9st 121b ... (Edgecombe) 1 Mr J B Williamson's Guy Fawkes, Ost 121b (Hodson) 2 Mr Gr P Donnelly's Mangahone, 9st 101b (Redmond) .1 Macaroni. Miss Griffiths, Minuet, Miss Agnes, and Auctioneer also ran. Betting was almost nominal, the race being an open one. Macaroni was a big favourite notwithstanding his top weight, and Mangahone was second in demand, with Miss Griffiths third, Guy Fawkes next ; but it was difficult, owing to the small amount of straight-out betting, to place them relatively. The start hi front of the grandstand was an even one. Mangahone led to the first hurdle. After all had got clear of it, Guy Fawkes took the i lead, with Mangahone second, Minuet third, Belle fourth, Macaroni and Miss Agnes in their rear, the latter evidently out of it. In the cutting Auctioneer came to the front and led through the straight, but soon surrendered it to Mangahone, and retaining a close second was followed by Belle. Round to the back Auctioneer again led and Guy Fawkes ran into second place, Mangahone sustaining third position. At the cutting Belle came up dangerously, and in the turn took front position. A great finish took place in the straight, the last hurdle being looked upon as a dangerous impediment considering the pace ; but Belle cleared it successfully, Guy Fawkes half a-length behind, 1 ; and Mangahone finished third, heading Auctioneer, who struck heavily, for third place. Belle won by two lengths. Time, 4min 31sec. 1194 on the totalisator (208 on the winner) ; dividend, £5 3s.
