Hawthorne took the lead over the second jump, followed by Julia Ann, Belle, Macaroni, and Mangahone; and this was the order when the top of the hill was reached. At the back of the course Guy Fawkes took a commanding lead, followed at long intervals by Macaroni and Miss Griffiths ; but here Belle again closed up with the leaders. Macaroni up to the time the hill was reached had raced well, but here he became pumped aud fell back.
