LAND BOARD.

The ordinary meeting of tke Land Board was held on Wednesday. Present: Messrs J. P. Maitland (chief 'commissioner), Brown, Duncan, Clark, M'Kenzie, and Bradshaw.

PORT CHALMERS.

J. Hinchcliff asked that section 36a, Port Chalmers, should be put up for sale. — To be offered at £12 10s.

WAIKAIA

The Waikaia Land and Progress Committee asked that all land west of the Waikaia river should be permanently reserved for mining purposes, as it is supposed to be auriferous. — The Ranger recommended that a number of sections should be reserved in blocks I and IX, and let on agricultural lease. — The School Oommis> sioners recommended that sections 57, 58, and 59, block I, 60 acres, on the west side of section 7, block VIII, and sections 18 to 23, block IX, be offered for seven years'' pastoral lease, at the upset rental of 6d per acre, subject to the conditions of the Mines Act. — Governor-in-Council recommended to offer, under part 7 of the act, sections 1, 7, 8, and 9, block V, Waikaia, and sections 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6, as two small grazing runs (capital value 20s) ; also section 12, block IV, as one grazing run (capital value 20s). — Consideration of the School Commissioners' request was adjourned.

CROOKSTON.

W. Cummings, licensee of runs 427, 428, and 429, and sections in blocks I and VI, Crookston, asked for an extension of his license for 21 years. — The board decided that they had no power to comply with the request.

OTEPOPO. Ranger Valpy reported en J. Cooper's application to lease the old bush reserve in section 40, block IX, Otepopo, and it was decided to issue a lice7ise for seven years for cutting flax, at 25s per annum.

GLENORCHT. The application of J. Davidson for a mineral lease of 100 acres at Glenorcby was granted, the license to be for 21 years, at Is per acre per annum.

CATLINS. A. Bradfield applied to purchase section 35, block I, Catlins. — Referred to the ranger.

HAEREWHENUA. The board considered a memo, from the Under-secrctary for Crown Lands in reply to a recommendation that section 20, block X, IlJiierewhenua, should be offered for pastoral lease, together with an application by R. Simpson under the perpetual- lease system. — Government recommended to reopen the land for perpetual lease.

PIGEOOT. A grazing right was applied for by J. Freeland on the unsold sections at Pigroot. — Declined. Government recommended to offer sections 1, 2, and 3 as one small grazing run (capital value 20s), as the board are of opinion that these sections will not be taken up separately.

VINCENT. Plans of roads on which the Vincent County Council propose to expend £102 11s 4d were approved.

CLARENDON. H. Russell, ]un., applied to lease sections 2 of 45 and 40 of 45, block VI, Clarendon, at Is per acre. — License for removing sand granted for seven years, at 30s per annum.

BANKLEBURN.

J. M'Donald requested that sections 2 and 3, block XI, Raneleburn, should be surveyed into three sections for settlement, and that sections 4 and 5, block XI, should be leased as a small grazing run or under the perpetual-lease system at 6d per acre. — The board declined to alter their resolution with regard to sections 2 and 3, and decided to recommend that sections 4 and 5 be offered as one grazing run.

ST. BATHANS.

J. J2wing asked that when qeefcion 33, block

I, St. Bathans, is offered it should be burdened with £30 valuation for improvements. — Referred to the district land officer.

SWINBUIIN.

D. Muir applied for a grazing right over sections 2 and 3, block X, Swinburn. — Declined.

OLENKENICH,

T. Kirk applied for a lease- of section 44, block X, Gleukenich, for coal mining purposes. — It; appeared that the section is already leased, and the ranger was instructed to prepare a report.

StANIOTOTO,

The Perpetual Trustees (for Messrs Duncan, Glenn, and Allison) applied to purchase 120 acres in block 11, Maniototo. — In the event of the district land officer reporting that there is no objection, and the licensee of the run agreeing to the same, the board decided to offer no objection to the application.

PERPKTUAL LEASES,

The following tenders for perpetual leases were accepted : — W. Fisher, section 15, block V, Blaekstone, Is per acre ; M. M'Lay, section 24, block IV, Glenomaru, Is ; C. M'Uroy, section 7, block IX, Mauiototo, Is ; J. G. Pearce, section 3, block XIV, Mauiototo, Is 9d ; W. M'Robie, section 1, block I, Otaraa, 2s ; W. C. Turnbull, section 4, block X, Waikaia, Is.

MOTIONS.

Consideration of Mr Brown's motions re advertising was deferred until to-day (Thursday), when the report of the commissioners who had visited the Nenthom district will also be discussed.

Mr Brown gave notice of his intention to move — "That all outward and inward correspondence in connection with the decisions of the board be laid on the table at each sitting of the board."

The Peninsula Rifles turned out on Saturday last for target practice, under tho command of Lieutenant R. Mercer, :it thfir new butts at Sandymount. Thirty members were present. They also competed for money prizes at 200, 300 and 400 yards ; five shots at each range. The following were the bjgh.tt.sb scores : —
