PORTOBELLO.
April 26. — Fine \vc»ath«r has prevailed throughout the Bailer holidays this year. On Good Friday a cricket inntch wa played between a team chosrn from our local club and some pressmen from Dunedin. The local men proved victorious. Soiree. — A social gathering was held in the Baptist Church on Good Friday evening. The attendance was good, and the whole- affair proved a great micci*s. Messrs Ings and Todd, of Caversham, and C 4. and S. Clark, of Hooper's Inlet, addressed the meeting during the evtsniug. j Road Board. — This ordinary meeting of the Portobello Road Board wan held on tho 24th April. Present : Messrs J. Mocandrew, jun. (chairman), W. Dickbon, W. Geary, G. Anderson, H. Duckmantou, J. Seatou, R. Raynbird, and T. Murray. The committee appointed to inspect the work on the contract on the Beach road reported to the effect that some of tho 'work was not very well done, but that this would be rectified. A letter was) read from the agant of Mrs Ferguson calling the attention of the board to the fact that water had been run on to section 7, on Hooper's Inlet road, it not being the uatural watercourse. A member of the board stated, on the other hand, that it. was the natural com so, and in order to settle the matter definitely the inspector and two members of the board visited the spot and, after inspecting it, came to the conclusion that the culvert was in the proper place. Mr Richmond wrote again iv regard to the opening of the road to his property on Lain lush, .stating that n« was put to great inconvenience on account of the stoppages. It was decided to let the matter stand over till next meeHug. A circular was received from the Rugistrargtineral requesting the: Vioard to furnish him with the statistic.-! as to revenue. &c. for thi j year ending 3l^t March last. Applications Turt.he various vacancies were opened. 1 1 was decided to appoint Mr Wadic clerk and treasurer. There were four applications for the appointment'of surfacemen, and the three former employes, who tendered at a reduction of M per day, were uppointed. Four tenders won- >•- ccived for horse work, and that of R. Soni.ni, who has been doing the work for the board for a number of years, was accepted at a slight reduction on his former terms. Accounts to the amount of £83 5s 4d were passed for payment, and the meeting closed.
