The Timaru Herald understands that Mr Alpheus Hayes, of Waimate, who has recently repurchased the brigantine Lady Mabel from Messrs Macpherson, Pilmer, and Co.. has entered into a contract to convey some 2000 tons of stone from Oamaru to Apia, the capital of Samoa The stone is to be used for the construction of a Roman Catholic othedrxl at Apia. The Lady Mabel.it will be remembered, was formerly owned by Mr Hayes, and was built to his order in Nova Scotia in 1883. She is a fine boat, well found, seaworthy, and a very fast sailer. In addition to conveying the stone to* Apia, she will be used by Mr Hayes in the produce trade, Bailing from Oamaru. The U.S.S. Company's s.s. Waihora, Captain Popham, from Melbourne, via Bluff Harbour, arrived at Port Chalmers at 7 a.m. on Wednesday, this being the first voyage she has made since her unfortunate mishap on Eddystone Point on February 17 while on the passage from Hobart to Melbourne. The Waihora has received a thorough and comprehensive overhaul at the hands of the Melbourne contractors, and is now in as perfect order and condition as she was when she left the builders' yards on the Clyde. Over 80 of her plates have been removed and new ones substituted, and she has been cleaned, painted, and grained afresh. The American barque Thomas A. Goddard has put out about 375 tons of her cargo at the cross wharf, Dunedin.
