The Wreck of the Taiaroa.

At a meeting of the Committee which had been appointed at the meeting on Tuesday evening to promote a fund for the relief of the sufferers by the Taiaroa disaster, the names of Messrs Dodds and Dodson, of Port Chalmers, were added to the Committee. A letter enclosing a cheqne was read as follows :— " To his Worship the Mayor of Dunedin. Dear Sir,— lt affords me pleasure to hand to you the enclosed cheque for £15 19s 6d, being the amount of a collection made at the Tabernacle, Great King street, last Sunday night in aid of the sufferers by the wreck of the s.s. Taiaroa. — Yours respectfully, W. S. Houchins, evangelist." His Worship the Mayor was authorised to relieve any case of immediate distress. It was decided to iuvite those in distress in consequence of the disaster to send particulars to the Committee.

At the weekly meeting of the Federated Seamau's Union, held at Port Chalmers on Tuesday evening, the president, Mr G. P. Dodds, moved that a vote of £50 sterling be granted towards the Taiaroa relief fund, which was unanimously carried. And yesterday evening ab the regular weekly meeting of the New Zealand branch of the Stewards' and Cooks' Union of Australasia, at the instance of Mr W. M. Innes, the president, a further sum of £25 was voted in aid of the fund. Kaikoura, April 21. Considerable difficulty is being experienced in dismantling the Taiaroa. The Wakatu brought away some of her fittings to-day; but it is feared that the quantity saved before the vessel breaks up will not amount to a great deal. The Tapanui Courier states that Mr J. U. Murray, late teacher at the Dunrobiu school, was not lost in the Taiaroa disaster, and he is still enjoying the pleasures of this life in the provincial district of Wanganui.
