MINING NOTES.

The Roxburgh East correspondent of the Mount Benger Mail writes: — Messrs Waigth and Co., who have gone to great expense in procuring efficient appliances to work their claim, and have not as yet bottomed, but expect to very soon. The prospects, however, are very promising, and when they do reach the bottom something handsome may be expected. They have a good number of men employed — the hands numbering 16 (including the shareholders, Messrs Waigth, Rickard, and Whelan). The claim is worked at present in three shifts per dny of 24 hours — five to six men beiug employed on each shift. The scene is a busy one, and no slone will be left unturned to develop as early as possible the resources of this claim. The other claimholders are reported as not sinking at present, but working thi- face of the claims. Very good dividends have been obtained, and with favourable weather __ things should greatly improve. To give a fair report of the workings of each a personal visit from a reporter will be necessary. Two experienced Victorian miners went up to the Island Block on Friday on behalf of the Melbourne syndicate. The men are well provided with tools and boring-rods, and it is their intention to submit the ground to a thorough test. — Tuapeka Times. At a meeting in Auckland of the New Zealand Smelting Company, a resolution was carried that the directors have full power to dispose of the property of the Company for the full amount. It is understood an influential syndicate has been formed to take over the works if favourable terms are concedeu.
