Southland Land Board,
The following business was transacted at the meeting of the Bth inst. : — : Applications granted : — For cash section 8, block 2, Mossburn, A. M'Allisten — For de« ferred-payment section 42/ blook^ 9, Winton Hundred, John Tippet, at £2 10s per acre. — To capitalise on section 1 of 243, Hokonui, H. 8. Jones. The last-named was also granted per* mission to take two white crops off section 249, Hokonui, which he held on a grazing lease. Michael Moylan applied" for a refund of portion of his purchase money for section 9, block 6, New River Hundred. 1 ' ' . The Chief Commissioner said the Board had in the first instance granted Moylan exactly the land he had applied for. Afterwards, at the re* quest of Moylan, the Board agreed-^illegally, he thought— to make an alteration in the.boun* daries of the section, so as to give him some good land in exchange for some bad. He (the Chief Commissioner) was not then Chief Commissioner, and as Chief Surveyor he did not object to the alteration. The alteration was agreed upon subject to the condition that Moyldn should deposit the survey fees. He (Moylan) did not comply with that condition, although repeated applications were made to him, and as the whole country could not be kept locked up through Mr Moylan's action} he (the Chief Surveyor) instructed • Mr . Hay to proceed with the survey. The matter was brought before the Board, and the proposed ex« change cancelled. Mr Richardson said the cancelling was beyond the power of the Board. - >
The Chief Surveyor said that by the same argument the first act — that of granting ithe < alteration — was also beyond the -power *>?< the Board, and the section would therefore stand as originally granted. The Board could; <nofeu deal with the matter, as it had been referred tbj) the Government. • " . After consideration, it was - agreed, on the motion of Mr Cowan, seconded by Mr Dennis* r ton — " That, on reviewing the whole circumstances of the case of, Michael Moylan, the - Boara resolve to recommend the Government? ■ to refund him £60 of the purchase money of his section." " • < ■ >■ The transfer of section 577. Hokonni, from James Bryce to his father, Peter Bryce, was sanctioned. •' ■• *• ' Francis Henry applied for permission fo cut up a few logs left on Moore and Co.'s late aret at Colac Bay.— Granted, at 2s 6d per log. • - - H. A. Wild applied for permission to purchaw five acres on Moore and Perkins' late 1 sawmill* area at Colac Bay. — Application declined. It was resolved to make a recommendation to the Conservator of Forests to allow 50 acres cf bush at Waituna lagoon to form part of I. Anderson's deferred-payment section. J. Fosbender intimated that a large number of cattle— about 50 — were continually running on Crown lands in the neighbourhood of Greea* hills, and trespassing on the land occupied by him. As he could not find an owner for the cattle, he asked the Board to take some action.' —Referred to Chief Commissioner.
