April 14. — During the past; fortnight the weather has been very unsettled, but luckily most of the harvest work in the district- has been completed and a good deal of grain threshed. In the Otaria and Kaiwera districts there is a considerable quantity of grain yet to cut, while farther south, I am informed, a number of settlers are similarly situated.
Public Saleyards. — Our Borough Council has just completed very substantial cattle and sheepyards on an excellent site. The bhee.pyards are small enough, but several acres are to be added to them. The Council have obtained a certificate from tho Resident Magistrate, in compliance with sections 310 of "The Municipal Corporations Act 1876 " ; consequently tho erections are duly and legally proclaimed a market.
Silver Cradle. — Our Mayor is to be presented by the Borough Council with a suitably engraved silver cradle, in commemoration of a son being born to him during his term of office. Dairy Factory. — Alternato tenders have been received for tho erection of the buildings for this new industry in wood and brick, but as yet the directors have not decided which to accept. Police Assistance. — In compliant?* with frequent requests wo have now received extra police assistance, but in place of an ordinary constable we have been allotted a lv.spoeted Member of the detective force all tho way from Auckland. I presume there has been some slight mistake in the instructions, whifh will no doubt be speedily rectified.
Accident. — Mr David Lawson, who met with an accident at Chatton Home weeks ngo, by which the bone of one leg was cut through and the other fractured at the ankle, is now progressing rapidly under the care of the Invercargill Hospital staff.
