February 16. — Harvesting h is already begun here, but is not in full swing yet, ami indued will not be general for another fortnight. Weather. — Steady rain set in on Saturday morning, and continued until about mid-day on Sunday. The Mataura River, which was exceedingly low, rose to a good lu'ight very rapidly on Monday.
Trout. — Several good baskets of trout have been taken from the Mntaura during the past few weeks when it w, ; low. The viver seemed at times to be heavily stocked with trout, but they appeared to b ' very migratory, for sometimes a fish could not bo m>«u
Ministerial Visit.— The: Hon. Mr Ballauce is to be here to-day, and will remain overnight. He will be deputationise'l upon various local questions, the Waimea rate in particular. I notice that Mr Ballance has «ivi-n hut t' oor en " couragement to any of the definition-, which he has met so far, with the exception of the Wendonside people, to whom he s ud that ho would endeavour to have the Waimea line, purchased, and that the settlers had his. sympathy in the matter.
Salvation Army. — 'This body still remains in our midst. On Saturday night a number of evil-disposed larrikins renewed a disgusting attack upon the members and others of t.he army, the result being a number of summonses issued.
