Waihemo County Council
The Waihemo County Council met at Palmerstou on Tuesday. There were present — Messrs A. D. Bell (Chairman), Robertson, M'Lareu, Todd, Hay, and M'Leod.
CORRESPONDENCE. A letter was received from the Department of JustO regarding the appointment of clerks of, resident magistrates' courts as clerks of licensing committees. It stated that the Government did not insist on their officers acting as clerks to licensing committees. They would, however, agree to any person recommended by the local bodies receiving the licensing fees being appointed. — The Chairman said this was in contradiction to the statement made by Mr M'Kenzie to the effect that clerks of courts ■were supposed to act as licensing committee clerks. — The letter was received.
Correspondence was read regarding the Kitchener compensation claim, the Government ■writing that they could uot take upon themselves to defend any action that might ensue. — The Chairman said he had discovered an agreement, dated January 7, 1885, that indemnified the Council from any action. He would therefore recommend that the Council accept the conditions of the Ministry unconditionally. — This suggestion was agreed to.
BEPOttT.
The Inspector reported that the main road from the cemetery to Flag Swamp road was very hard and rough tor light traffic, except where the roadside was wide enough to allow of the traffic going on it. The distance was about three and a-half miles, and if one mile of that were gravelled and some repairs done to the sideways, the public using the road would have no reason to complain for some time. He would also recommend that the metal lying on the roadside be divided, and their portion used on Goodwood Main road at the foot of the cutting near Butters' old farm. Some of it had been lying there for 12 years, and he thought it was time to put it to use. The Waikouaiti County Council had been using some on district roads already, The cost of one mile of gravelling would be £60. — It was resolved that the work of gravelling the main road stand over, and that the clerk write to the Waikouaiti County Council regarding a division of the metal as suggested.
The Inspector also reported that the work on Philip's road, Meadowbank, had been done, but in order to make the road practicable it would have to be made down to the Inch Valley Hotel. The work could be done by the surfacemen. — Adopted.
Another report regarding the main road to Pigroot was also read. At Falconer's cutting there was a length of about 15 chains requiring metal. The road being now very dry, this would be a good time to do the work. It would cost about £10 per chain — in all about £150. — Resolved to call tenders for the work at once.
