TUAPEKA COUNTY JOCKEY CLUB RACES.
(fbom ouit own cokkespondent.) First Day— Thursday. Lawrence, January 21. The Tuapeka County Jockey Club's third annual race meeting was commenced to-day. The weather was really splendid for racing. The various events, although the fields were small, were well contested. The boil over of the day events was Factory Girl's win in the Publicans' Handicap. The sum of £744 passed through the totalisator, which was worked most satisfactorily by Messrs Solomon and Murrell, of Cromwell. The results of the various events are given below :—: — MAIDEN PLATE, Of 20 soys. Distance, one mile and a half. Mr T Keenan's Warbeck, 4 yrs, 9st ... (Cotton) 1 Mr W H Tnggart's Martyr filly, 3 yrs, 7st 111b (WTaggart) 2 Mr W Rodgers' Heather Boy, (5 yrs, 9st lib (Finnigan) 3 Lady Ethel (Ost lib) and Lackington (9st lib) also ran. Lady Ethel jumped away with the lead, closely attended by Martyr filly and Heather Boy. Martyr filly soon came to the front, and on passing the judge's box for the first time ,vas two clear lengths in advance of Heather Boy. On ascending the coal-pit hill, Warbeck came through his horses and took command of affairs, the result from this out never being in doubt, as he came in an easy winner some half-dozen lengths in front of Martyr filly. Heather Boy was a good third. Time, 2 mm. 54 sec. NOVEL RACE, Of 30 soys. Distance, one mile. Mr H Craig's Spe im n, 5 yrs. 7st (Cochrane) 1 Mr JPoole's Iris 4vrs,9st4lb . (G Evans) 2 Mr T James' Land Leaguer, 5 yrs, 7st 31b ... 3 Kuriwao f9st 41b) also ran. A false start occurred, Specimen doing three-quarters of a mile on his own account. On again facing the starter all the horses got away well together, Iris taldng the lead, which was soon wrested from her by Specimen. The latter ran gamely ; and although hard pressed by Iris and Land Leaguer, managed to pass the post half a length in advance of Iris, who was the same distance in front of Land Leaguer. Time, 1 mm. 51 sec. A dividend of £5 10s was paid on the winner. PUBLICANS' HANDICAP, Of 30 soys. Distance, one mile. Mr James O'DonneH's Factory Girl, 3 yrs, 6st 101b (Couhrane) I Mr II Swift's Foulplay, aged, 7st 131b (carried 2Jlb overweight) ... ... ...(T Smith)' 2 Mr M Studholme's Viking, 4 yrs, Bst 21b (M Allen) 3 Mr M Gordon's Epicure, 6 yrs, 7st 101b ... 0 Rather a straggling start took place, Factory Girl and Foulplay getting the best of it. The former led the way, attended by Foulplay, on passing the judge's box for the first time. A neck-and-neck race for the remainder of the distance ensued between these two, with the result that Factory Girl caught the judge's eye first. Foulplay was half a length behind. Viking and Epicure were completely out of it. Time, lmin. 47sec. Dividend on the winner, £7 11s. DISTRICT HANDICAP, 01 20 oovs. Distance, one mile and a halt. Mr James Henderson's Bushman, aged, 7st (Cochrane) 1 Mr P Rodgers' Heather Boy, liyrs, Bst (H George) 2 Mr T Dwyer's Warwick, 9sib ... (J Cotton) 3 Lackington (7st 121b) was scratched. "This proved a " boil over." Bushman, who had very few supporters, took the lead and was never collared, although hard pressed at the finish by Heather Boy. Time, 2min. 51sec. A dividend of £7 11s was paid on the winner. LAWRENCE HANDICAP, Of 508OVS. Distance, one mile and a half, Mr H Gordon's Garibaldi, aged, 7st 71b,
(T Cochrnne) 1 Mr M Stuaholmo's Vikiug, 4yrs, 7et (Laughlin) 2 Mr M Sherwin's Makarnkarn, aged, fist (Allan) 3 Knickerbocker Sam (Bst 61b) and Factory Girl also ran. This was the big event of the ■ day. A lot of fiddling occurred at the post before the flag fell to a good start. Garibakli took the lead, closely followed by Viking and Knickerbocker Sam, with Mokarafeara an,d Factory Girl some lengths behind. Garibaldi had the race well in h?,nd throughout, ajid 'although Viking made several efforts to get on equal terms these proved unavailing, Mr Gori don's horse winning somewhat easily by a length and a half. Time, 2min. 44sec. The Hack Selling Race was won by Simpson's Gondalino. There were five starters. Skcond Day — Friday. The weather for the second day's meeting was really fine for racing. The attendance was not so large as on the previous 'day. The results are as follow : — HURDLE RACE, Of 35 soys. Two miles and a distance. Mr Gordon's Garibaldi, 9st 41b ... (Cotton) 1 Mr Greener's Trapper, lOsfc 21b ... ... 2 Mr R Murphy's Marquis, ilst 101b ... ... 3 Garibaldi took the jumps in fine style, and won easily. Time, 4 mm. 1 sec. Dividend, £2 12s. FLYING HANDICAP, Of 20 soys. One mile. Mr Studholme's Viking, Bst 121b (M'Laughlin) 1 Mr Tnggart's Martyr ill ly, Ost ... ... 2 Mr Gordon's Epicure. 7st 51b ... ... 3 Viking won easily by a length and a-half. Time, 1 mm. 47 sec. Dividend, £1 19s. HANDICAP TIME TROT, Of 25 soys. No weight under lOst. Threp mUes. Mr Mercer's Silver Bell, 40sec. ... Silver Bell won by about three lengths. Cockey trotted very well. Time, 8 mm. 50 sec. Dividend, £4 14s. TRIAL STAKES, Of 20 soys, for three-year-olds, foaled within the counties of Tuapeka, Bruce, Taieri, and Clutha Distance, one mile. Mr Jas O'Donnell's Factory Girl, 3 yrs, Bst lib (Coehrane) 1 Mr H Craig's Mystery, 3 yrs, Sst lib ... Mr H Craig's Davie, 3 yrs, Sst lib Factory Girl took the lead and was never collared, winning easily by a couple of lengths Time, 1 mm. 47 sec. Dividend, £1 19s. TUAPEKA JOCKEY CLUB HANDICAP, Of 50 soys. Two miles. Mr W Greener's Trapper, aged, 6st 101b _, (Cochrane) 1 Mr T James Sir Audley, aged, 6sfc 21b ... 2 Mr M Sherwin's Mokarakara, aged, Bst 121b ... 3 Mr H Swift's Foul Play, aged, 7st 121b ... 0 Mr M Gordon's Blackboy, aged ... ... 0 Viking (7st 101b) was scratched. This was the best race of the meeting. Trapper took the lead, which he maintained from start to finish, winning in 3 mm. 44 sec. Dividend, £11 Is. CONSOLATION TIME TROT, Of £12 10s. Two miles.
