Ihe wages offered by the Government to the unemployed are 4s 6d per day. Mr P. J. Moss has addressed the electors of Parnell, and received a vote of confidence. He denounced further borrowing. Up to the 14th 0253 bales of wool were received in Timaru this season. The clip is expected to be considerably above that of last season.
Information has been received at Auckland of the death of John Malcolm, a settler at Henderson, under singular circumstances. He was taking a hide from 'the decomposed carcass of a bullock, when he took ill and died, it is believed from blood-poisoning. Sir Julius and Lady Vogel returned to Wellington on Monday. During the passage from Lyttelton, Sir Julius suffered severely from pains in his side and back, and Dr Grace, who was sent for on arrival of the Hinemoa, forbade his removal from tho steamer until this afternoon.
At the Auckland University College Council meeting on Saturday the Sinclair scholarship was awarded to P. E. Wilson, of Dunedin ; and the Gillies scholarship to W. T. Green, of Avonside, Christchurch. Both are tenable for three years, with a grant of £100 per annum. A protest was forwarded against the candidature or Green, but as the council considered it vague, it was consequently not sustained. Another fatal accident has occurred in the Mackenzie country. Mr G. Thomson, brother of Mr A. B. Thomson, of Glentanar station, Lake 1 ukalri, was drowned on Monday, 7th mst. He had gone across the lake to Newlands for the mail in a patent canvas boat. His body has not been found, find as there was no wind to upset the boat it is supposed he jumped out when near the shore and sank in a quicksand. His hat and the boat were found floating near the shore. He was about 26 years of age and only recently from Home.
