Southland Land Board.
The following business was transacted at the meeting of the Southland Laud Board of the 3rd inst. : —
The following applications vere granted: — Rural land — Edward Fuely, section 14, village of Balfour : Margaret Buchanan, section 1, block 3, village of Woodfickl. For deferred-payment land — Ernest Lorenz, section 608, Hokonui. To capitalise — Duncan Davidson, section 243, Hokonui.
The lessee of section 10, Pahia Village, was ordered either to complete the transfer or occupy the section, otherwise it would be forfeited.
It was decided to reduce the valuation on section 313, Forest Hill Hundred, in order that the section might be readily taken up.
R. Howorth's application for the board to open all unsold sections in the township of Lowther for sale either by auction or application was postponed in order to learn what section the applicant wished. Exemption from residence was granted under sub-section 3 of clause 71 of the Land Act to the holder of a small deferred-payment section at Pahia.
Ranger Campbell reported that A. Alson had been illegally cutting timber in the Otatarua Bush reserve. The offender said he was working for R. Murray, who had no license. — Resolved that both parties should be asked to appear before the Board at its next meeting to show cause why they should not be prosecuted for unlawful trespass. Denis Corkery wrote, stating that he had applied to the Board for 100 acres in block 17, Jacob's River Hundred. His application was refused, the Board appearing to think that he wanted it for firewood purposes. That was not his intention. He desired to get it for grazing purposes, and consequently renewed his application. — It was resolved to inform the applicant that the Board was of opinion that the land should be sold at an upset price of not less than £2 per acre, applicant to pay the sur.vey fees. J. P. Young applied for permission to take some gravel out of a forfeited section on the Pahia Flat. The work would not depreciate but rather increase the value of the section. — Permission was granted to take 400 yards of gravel, in accordance with the agreement come to between Mr Youmg and the previous holder of the ground.
It was resolved to request the Government to throw open sections 28 to 30, block 5, East Wintou, at an upset price of £4 per acre, as being of special value, owing to proximity to the railway. The Chairman stated that a number of de-ferred-payment settlers, in arrears, had not taken notice of the circulars sent out requesting them to appear before the Board to make some arrangement. It was decided to inform the offenders that if they did not appear before the Board within a fortnight, the advisability of declaring their sections forfeited would be considered.
It was agreed to recommend the Government to make a number of alterations in the timber x'egulatioiis.
