THE MINES.
The La Monte furnace, it appears, has not proved the great success that the promoters anticipated. The Thames Advertiser says : — " With reference to the statement made yesterday, on the authority of the manager of the La Monte furnace, that Waite and party, of the Dixon claim, had expressed themselves satisfied with a five-ton parcel of ore, Mr Chas. Waite has called at our office and shown us their sale note, from which it appears that the amount to be paid for the lot is £12 3s. The total assay value of the gold and silver in the parcel is £30 3s 3d, from which £18 0s 3d is deducted for percentage and smelting expenses. The proprietors estimated the quartz to have been worth 2oz of gold per ton if it had been crushed, besides which their tailings have always been saleable. So far from being satisfied, they consider it would have been better to have sent their dirt to the battery, as heretofore, and they have determined to follow this course in future."
