WAIPAHI.
December 8. — The weather continued to be fine during the past week, but the nights were cold. The beginning of this week has been broken, and cold rains are falling. The crops which are backward will be benefited by the rains, if they do not last too long or prove too cold.
Religious. — Our spiritual wants are administered to regularly by the Rev. Mr Rothwell and Mr Roy. The latter gentleman reotimed his services, which were interrupted by the death of one of his sons, on Sunday. His sermon on Job was well adapted to the occasion, and was much, appreciated by his congregation.
Belieing Appearances. — A story relating to the first gentleman mentioned in the former paragraph was given me by a friend. • The rev. gentleman, who is one of the best riders in this island, was in Dunedin lately. Requiring a hack he went to a livery stable for one. On asking for a horse he was informed they were all out, but on pressing the proprietor he admitted there was one, adding, after a glance at his clerical costume, " You can't ride him." " I should like to see the horse I cannot ride ; bring him out," said the rev. gentleman. On looking over the horse he said, " Bring me a pair of spurs." With a look of consternation the proprietor exclaimed, " Oh, faith, sir, he'll go widout spurs." And so he did, giving little or no trouble to his bold rider.
Cemetery. — A meeting of the trustees of the cemetery was held on Saturday night, when it was decided to lay the ground off in plots ready for purchasers.
Piscatorial. — During the late fine weather some capital fish have been landed from the river, and several gentlemen from Dunedin have made good baskets.
