The School of Mines.
A special meeting of the Olago University Council was held recently, of which no notice was given to the Press, when among other matters dealt with an important report was brought up from the committee on the School of Mines. On inquiry we learn that the report, after referring to the meagre attendance at the School of Mines, recommended that unless some alteration can be made, or further inducements held out to students, it does not appear desirable that the school should be continued. The report concludes as follows :—": — " 1. Your committee recommend that, with a view to rendering the School of Mines more popular, the Government be requested, in conformity with the terms of Professor Ulrich's engagement, to call upon him to travel round, inspect, and report on the various goldfields of the Colony. In this way a greater interest in scientific gold-mining might be, stirred up and more students induced to attend the School of Mines. Personal acquaintance with Professor Ulrich on the part of those interested in mining, and on the other hand an increased acquaintance with mining requirements in the Colony by the Professoi , would doubtless be of great service to the school. 2. Failing this, your committee recommend that the School of Mines be discontinued. 3. The Chancellor is recommended to address the Minister of Mines in terms of accompanying letter."
