OREPUKI.

August 24. — A few roving spirits intend to try their luck at Criffel from 1 ' this district. Things are very quiet, and there are others besides those 1 mentioned who ate "waiting for something to turn up. ' ' ' - :o Temperance. — Mr P. Fulton lectured' on Saturday night, and although the' 'downpour of vain interfered with the attendance very considerably, there was on the whole a* Very fair turn out. Mr Fulton earned his. audience with him. His anecdotes were very good, and he always seemed to have them at co'mniand' ( and to put them in the right place, presenting in this respect a' marked contrast to the lecturers that we have been in the habit of listening to. The lecture was declared by all to be a most excellent and entertaining one, and T hope it will prove especially profitable to the 10 persons who donned the blue and signed the pledge. Mr Fulton lectured again on

, Sunday afternoon, and though the weather then was very little better then than on the previous ' night, there was really a splendid turn-out. The Rev. Mr Hodgson was holding service here at the same time, and he courteously presided at the meeting. The Presbyterian choir sang some ' of Sankey and Mbody's hymns at intervals. When, at the end of the lecture, the audience was again called upon to come forth and don the blue, other l 0 persons responded to the call, making in all 20 recruits for Mr Fulton's trip alone; and as this«is a noted temperance district, this number is a great augmentation to the ranks, and I am afraid there is a poor lookout for the new hotel now building.
