RACTNG IN NEW ZEALAND.

THE OTAGO HUNT CLUB MEETING. The Hunt Club were singularly fortunate aa regards weather for their annual day's racing on Saturday, the result being that a number of ladies appeared at Forbury Park in tho courso of the afternoon,, and the attendance both on ■ the lawn and in the enclosure waa very satisfactory. The steeplechases, in which, of course, most interest centred, did not bring gut any very large fields, but the racing was quite up to tb9 average, and no. serious injury 'Occurred to any horso or rider in the inovitablo « spills " that took place. There was nothing, in fact, to mar the enjoyment of visitors, if wo except tho disappointment felt that the refreshment department was not so well looked after as is generally the case. Tho usual cateier d,id "not have chaige of affairs on Saturday, apd several luncheon parties found cause for dissatisfaction in the arrangements The efforts of the Jockey Club officials caußed matters on the course to x pass off smoothly enough, the one weak p^iut being the bad Starting of a few races. This, however, was by no means the case in every event, as the flag was several times lowered most successfully, sphere were two totalisator-macbines on the ground, and speculation was rolorably brisk. * The details of the racing are as follow :— MAIREN IJUfITERS' STBERLBCHASE, Of 40 BOYB. Th,e second horse to receive 10 bovb from the stake*. Wekht for a«e. For all qualified huntets'. One mile and a-half . Amateur riders Wlowed 71b. llr E Lfting's pt g Glenara, 5 yre, list 81b ■ W Cotton) 1 Mr W H Taggart'fl b g Archer, aga<l, llbt 101b (Mr J Stcyhenson) 2 Ur J Konyon'B br g Larry, aged, l.at 31b (T Cotton) 3 Mr J Allen's bgr Turk, aged, 12=t 3ib (J Allen) 0 Betting: 3 to 2 agst Glenara, 2 to 1 Archer. Mr Poole's Turk and Trapper were scratched. Reindeer, although not formally scratched in any race, was not upon the course. Mr David|l6n acted as starter. Turk was first to get kw'av at the fall of the flag, and he travelled Steadily to the firßt jump, a sod fence, with Glenara and Archer attending him, Larry last. ' The jump had the effect of thinning tho ranks lamentably. Both Turk and Larry ■truck and fell, and their riders were unable to remount in time to continue the race. Turk, in fact, was not caught, and went a good part of the course riderless. Glenara approached the second jump in close company with Archer, but here the latter baulked and ran round, losing about 100 yards bcfoie he could be got over. Mr Stephenson persevered with him, and took the stand jumps not hopolcsßly , in the rear of Glenara. Tho pursuit wan continued all round the course, no further mistakes being made, and Archer gaining upon the 9 faVb'urite steadily. At the last turn they were Wjmofat up.dn terms, bus Archer had been pushed hard, whilst' Cotton bad a good deal in frand, and Glepara drew away eaßily Q0 yards f ppfp bpffie, and passed the poat a winner by a r clear two lengths. Time, 8 mm. 49 sec. Of £153 in the totalisators, £96 was on the

Hazard and Violin were scratched. There was some trouble at thb post, mainly owing to the difficulty of quieting Billy. One excellent chance of a otait was mifesed, but there waa no cause to grumble at the order in which they were at last despatched. Billy cut out the running from the first, being followed past the stand by Lady Emma and Captain Webster almost neck aud neck ; Trumpeter kept handy. At tho corner Captain Webster shook himself clear of tho mare and ehallonged Billy, running at his girths to tha back of the courre. Lady Emma meanwhile appeared to find the weight too much, and dropped away to last place. Trumpeter was evidently unabl9 to touch the leaders. When threo-quarters of a mile had been traversed, Captain Wobster had had succeeded in assuming command of affairs, which ho held to the finish, although Billy was pressed hard. The lattor had, however, boen ridden all the way, and the whip was hard at work up the straight. Captain Webster, on the other hand, was in comfortable circumstances, and came away with the greatest ease from the distance post, winning by nearly half-a-dozen lengths. Trumpeter was a close third, and Lady Emma was not hurried at the finish. The pace was a hot one, as evidenced by the timo — 2 mm. 2 sec. Of £504 in the totalizators, £249 was on the winner. The patience of the onlookers was severely tried by the time wasted at the starting-post. Half an hour at least was thrown away ? partly by the mancuvring of several jockeys in their endeavours to gain an advantage. Quiver, Jenny, and Beeswing broke away in turn, and when the flag at last fell to one of the worst starts ever seen on the course, Jonny was left at the post. Fairy got away with a lot in hand, and was pressed hard by Beeswiug the entire distance. She was never caught, however, aud passed the post a winner by over two lengths. Black Boss came lato in the day, and wrested the third place from Quiver. Time, 1 mm. 25 sec. Of £509 in the totalisators, only £52 was on ITairy. Dividends : Inside, £8 17s ; outside, £8 15s. The field straggled out at once, King Arthur going to the front. At the second jump Trapper baulked and got into the ditch, Rona c&me to grief opposite the enclosure, and at the first of the stand jumps Magic followed suit, leaving only four in tho race. Linwood and Falcon chased the favourite for the first mile and a-h{Jlf, and the latter passed the stand for tha second time still with a substantial load, which he maintained in spite of some wide steering. No further mistakes were made, and at the last turn intD the straight Falcon and Linwood both looked likely. The favourite, however, shook himself clear easily in the lun home, and Won by nearly haK-a-dozou lengths. Time, 5 mm. 53 sec. Of £- r .47 in the totalisafcors, £229 was on King Arthur.
