RIVERTON. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.)

July 21] Electoral. -To-night the candidates lor Parliament tary honours will blow their last bloats of war ; and surely they ought, all four of tnem, to be well out of breath, f<-r a more vigorous speechifyirg has not, perhaps, been enjoyed elsewhere in New Zealand, I say " cnjiyed," for with the- calm, forcible, and sometimes eloquent Hodakinson, the easy, half-in-earnett Hirst, the WuateriTie, " what-I-have-dono " Daniel, and the rough, ready-witted " away-with-theblack-coated-jintleraen " Hayes, surely we have had variety ; and does not old Cowper say —

" Variety's the very spice ol life, That gives it all its flavour" ?

Political.— A committee of gentlemen has been formed, to meet after the general election, for consider ration of the real cauee or causes of the prevailing depression, that aotno effort may be made to counteract the same. The chief speaker at a meeting held lately ridiculed in toto Major Atkinson's statement of the causes. He said that because the Wool clothes us and the wheat feeds us the low prices of, wool and wheat have nothing whatever to do with the depression. He ueemed to overlook the fact that we produce very much more than we can wear or eat. . MKTKOROLoaioiii.— St. S within (peace to hli ashes !) brought us the deaired fine weather' on the 16th, but forgot us again on the 18bh, when a very high B.W. wind blew and some hail shower* fell. Then there wag a sudden change to hard frost again on Saturday morn, ing, but before night again raid ; frost again on Bun« day morn ing, and a fine day ; but at 10 p.m. a dead south wind sprang up, and since that time every hour or two brings us rain acd hail. The liongwood range looks whiter than it has done before lor the season.

RBitiaioui. — The Presbyterian '■ Sabbath-flchool children had their annual feast indoors this yen?, mustering in good numbers in spite of the cold showers last Friday evening. The tea, eatables, and singing were good, so it may he taken without telling that the youngsters enjoyed themselves.
