WEST TAIERI. (from our own correspondent) July 16.
Thb EI/EOtiohs.— Mr Fulton addressed the electors last Tuesday evening atWoodaide; and Mr Wat hen on Saturday, at the schoolhouse, ..Hauugatua. 'J ho addresses of both candidates wcie bubstantlally the came as those already published. A number of qv:o3- I tions were put to tbo lcpeetive candidates, who replied to each of them in a suitable manner. Serious Fire — A destructive fire occurred this morning in Mangutua district, resulting in the loss of a threshing machine, along with a straw stack and the greater part of a stack of oats, the property of Mr Thomas Bathgate. Mr Bathi;ato was employed at the time in threshing the oats, and shortly after 10 o'clock a.m. part of tne straw stack was perceived to be on fire. An attempt was made at once to get tt extinguished, but the fire spread so quickly that the efforts were of no avail. In a short time both stacks and threshing-machine wero all in a blaze. With the aid of those present, and Mr G. M'Diarmid's team of horse 1 , the engine was removed from the fire before it bad made headway. Mr Bathgate will no doubt feel the loss greatly, ns, although the threshing-machine and oat stack were insured, the insurance is far below the value of the property destroyed.
