BILLIARDS.

The Napier Telegraph states that a billiard match was played at Hastings recently between Mr "Weiss and Mr G. Ellis, the latter receiving 500 points in a frame of 1000 up. Mr Weiss succeeded in putting together 600 points while Mr Ellis made 153, and the former won the game by 347. Mr Weiss' best breaks were 85, 76, 63, 56 (13 spot strokes), 53, 50 (seven and eight spot strokes respectively), 44..40, 40, 40, 37, 35, and 34. ' ' ' Roberts and Peall commenced their great match sof. 10,000 up for apprize of £100, given by the Westminster Aquarium Company, on May 24. Roberts conceded 2000 points, and play was to extend over the evenings of the following week. On the first day there was a large attendance, and those who imagined thnt Roberts was not the " flyer " at the spot which he is acknowledged to be in the all-round game, were agreeably surprised, as, although he disdained ita use for a considerable period, when he did start he played it a long way faster than his opponent, and in one of his breaks (605) manipulated 157 of these favourite hazards. Peall was the first away with 80 (23 spots), 51 (4 spots), 42 (10 spots), 31, and 41, and reached 2316 to Roberts', who had confined himself to all-round play, 146. Robertß now bestirred himself, and working up to the top of the table, put the red away 40 times in a total of 149. Peall presently responded with 139 (41 spots), after which he progressed rather slowly, and Roberts with 267 (G8 spots), 231 (36 spots), 78, and 89 (26 spots), and with a total of 1251, was in play when the afternoon entertainment concluded, Peall's score* beiug 2719. In the* evening Roberts .brought his unfinished brake up to 113 (33 spots), and supplementing this with 86, 168 (89 spots), and 179 (46 spots), rapidly degree ssd the gap, and although Peall

put in a useful run of 277 (76 spots) and reached 3168, it availed him little, as Roberta, playing in his best form, ran from 1799 to 2404 in a grand total of 605 (82, 32, 24, and 51 spots). From this point nothing maoh was done until Roberts (having arriveofat 2601 to Peall's 3309) play ended for the day On Monday Roberts only made his brake no to 17, and Peall replied with 9. In his next inmnga Roberts manipulated 89 (25 anotsl which elicited 131 (38 spots) from Peall Tho latter novr had hard Juck, and Roberts had matters pretty much his •vrn way, 122 (23 spots) and 393 (89 spots), taking him to 3129 to Peall's 3470, and be being in play when tte interval occurred. On resuming Roberts failOT to alter his figures, and Peall put in a useful t \ 12 j B ? ot £ Thlß adva nco waß promptly checked by Roberts with G2 (12 spots), and a run of 182 (48 spots) was also neutra&ed by the giver of points rafciling up 221 (7O B pots). i'eall had but two more chances after this Roberta, with 213 (45 spots) and 11« (36 spots)' passing the stage fixed upon for Dlav to ceas« at 3751 to Peall's 3773, thus gettingwShin lS points of his man at this early portion of the match, and having the ball well placed for spot-stroke practice.
