Alsike

TO THE EDITOR. Sir,— Mr Jenner says in last Witness that alsike " is a cross between the red clover and white clover."' I should like to know hh authority for this statement. When first introduced, over 40 years ago, it was popularily considered to be " a cross," but this idea was soon discarded, and it was ranked as a distinct variety. True, it is known as Trifolium hybrida, but was so named from being intermediate in its appearance between pratense and repense. Sweden is its native country, and the celebrated botanist hailing from that land classes it as a distinct species. — lam, &c, Old Seedsman. February 11.
