Miss Nellie Fortescue (Miss Finuey), the well-known actress of the Savoy Theatre, intends bringing an action against Lord Arthur William Gsrmoyle, second and eldest living son of Lord Cairns, for a breach of promise of marriage. It is reported that the damages will be fixed at £50,000. February 12. Sir Henry Bartle Frere is in a very critical i state of health. A wedding party, consisting ot 30 persons, baa been drowned in the river Thesis, in Hungary. (Special to Melbourne Age.) The announcement that Bishop Moran, of Odsory, had been selected by the Council of Cardinals to succeed the l&te Archbishop Vaughan at Sydney is premature, and the report that he had been summoned to Rome for the purpose of being created a cardinal is unfounded. The names of Dr Walsh (president of Maynooth College), Dr Moran, and Dr Murray (Bishop of Maitland), will on Monday, the 3rd insfe., be submitted by the Propaganda to the Pope for his approval. Postmaster-general Fawcett has determined that in future Australian letters shall be sent by the first outgoing steamer, irrespective of any directions marked on the letters indicating by which mail service it is desired to have them sent. Lieutenant- colonel Stewart, who acted as assistant adjutant of the cavalry division to the expeditionary force sent to Egypt in 1882, has been appointed Deputy-governor of the Soudan. Sir Julius Vogel is making good progress with his scheme to form a public company to undertake the construction and laying of duplicate submarine cables between England and Australia. -There will be no difficulty in securing on advantageous terms the requisite amount of capital for this undertaking. The company in course of formation by Sir Julius Vogel offer to undertake the work on condition that the Australian Colonies guarantee a subsidy of £4,000,000. The death is announced on February 3 of W. S. Hayward, the well-known novelist, author of "The Black Angel," "The Fiery Cross," &c.

Colonial breadstuffs continue quiet, but steady, at last quotations — viz. : Adelaide wheat, 445; New Zealand do, 36s to 425; Adelaide flour, 3ls— all ex store. TallowAustralian, fair average quality, remains at 398 for beef and 42a for mutton. February 7. Adelaide whaat (ex store) remains at 44a, and New Zealand do at 36s to 425 ; Adelaide fllOUr (ex warehouse), 31s, Australian fcallow — fair average quality beef, 395 ; mutton, 425. February 8, Severe floods have occurred at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and fully 10,000 persons' have been rendered homeless. An immense amount of damage to property is reported. Most of the principal provincial Liberal papers condemn the irresolute Egyptian policy of the Government. / Commenting upon the recent engagement at Trinkitat, the united Ireland newspaper is jubilant at the success of the False Prophet, ElMahdi. February 9. The frozen meat per Liguria and Tongariro has arrived in excellent condition. The Tongariro will make her next voyage through the Suez Canal. February and March shipments of wheat to London direct have been sold at 41s, and for the Continent at 435. I The Spectator demands that the Government j should now throw aside all further pretence, ] and assume the direct government of Egypt. The Times and Pall Mall Gazette severely censure the Gladstone Ministry for shutting their eyes to obvious facts in the vain hope of avoiding the responsibilities which all Europe lays at their door. The Pall Mall Gazette says that circumstances demand that England should assume the absolute government of Egypt for a fixed period. There are still garrisons in the Soudan exceeding 30,000 men menaced by the rebels, and the Radical journal argues that it is England's duty to rescue them. February 11, The Calcutta merchants favour the proposition for a direct line of steamers with Australia. The Chairman of the Bengal Chamber of Commerce, however, considers that a Government subsidy will be necessary to support the line. Her Majesty the Queen has presented Bishop Barry with a number of volumes, and an ample amount has been subscribed to replace the library which the rev. gentleman lost by the Simla. Those of the Phoenix Park murderers who were convicted and sentenced to terras of imprisonment have been removed to the prison at Mr Fawcett, Postmaster-general, has decided at present to detain the New Zealand mails, unless specially addressed via Brindisi, until the departure of the San Francisco maijs.
