ENGLISH AND FOREIGN.
Very few of the crack two-year-olds of 1883 are engaged in this year's English Derby, which is not likely to fall to the best three-year-old of the year. When the mail left, the filly by Hermit out of Adelaide was favourite at 10 to 1, the only others backed being Frifcz and .Harvester. The Adelaide filly coat about £3500 as a yearling, and last year she got back her pur-chase-money by winning the July Stakes and the Dewhurst Plate. Nominations for the 10,000 Eclipse Stakes, to ba run at Sandenn in 1886, closed on Dacember 11, but they had not been made public when the last mail left. Sporting circles in England circulate the rumour that an American millionaire is to establish a gigantic racing stud there. He v wlll not coutme himself to American horses. The jockey Wood has purchased Heath Villa at Newmaiket, from Sir J. Astley, for £3500. The Earl of Craven, a well known sportsman, diesl in December, at the early age of 42. There has been very little betting over the Derby, and the Great Epsom race will not be as interesting as usual, so many of the beat two-year-olds being missing from the nominations. At present the Adelaide filly is favourite at 10 to 1 ; while Harvester and Fritz figure at 100 to 8. Sir W. J. Clarke purposes purchasing three or four of the clevere3t steeplechasers he can obtain in Australia as a present to, his Bon in England. Negotiations have already been entered into by the Sunbury .baronet with a view to the purchase of Blackthorn and Abdallah. More unlikely things may happen than the winner of the V.R.C. Grand National Steeplechase carrying the silk at Aintree next season ; while old Abdallah will probably figure with the hounds at Melton Mowbray. All the brood mares, stallions, foals, and horses in training the property of the association which formerly raced under the colours of the late Count de Lagrange were to be sold by public auction, without reserve, at the Tattersall FranQais, Paris, about the end of last month. M. Lefevre is lying seriously ill at Ohamont. The popular Fiench sportsman has been in poor health for spine time, and was unable to be present at the back end meetings at Newmarket. His condition exhibits such Blight improvement that it is beginning to excite anxiety. Petronel has gone to the stud. The following table shows the principal winning sires during the past season : No of Kacea Amount.

Oasian won the most money in stakes last year, his total being £9121; Galliard won £8572 ; Tristan, £7628 ; Supftrb^Sl •St Blaise, £554.7 ; Reprieve, £5168 ; Wild Thyme,' Two years ago, after FoxhalFs Cambridgeshire victory, the most extravagant Btoriea were circulated respecting his owner's gifts to trainer, jockey, and all concerned, which stories were entirely untrue. It seems, according to a contemporary, to have been very much the same kind of thing in the case of Beqdigo. Fiench, hiß trainer, announces that he did not receive a present of £1000, as has been stated, and that he has severed his connection with Mr Barclay because he only received 40 to 1 to the amount of £12 10a, whereas there was a previous arrangement that he was to be "on " a pony at these odds. The Whitsuntide Plate of 2000 boys, for two« year olds, to be run on the Friday of the Manchester Whitsuntide meeting, has olesed with a capital entry of 102.
