Melbourne, July 19. The Treasurer, in the Financial Statement, announced that it is proposed to raise a new loan of one million for the construction of new lines of railway, and in order to utilise the rolling-stock and rails now on hand. It is further intended to issue a new loan of three millions to meet the old loan falling due. The public debt of the Colony is now £26,000,000. The Treasurer showed that the revenue from railways and waterworks, after the payment of all expenses, waß sufficient to pay 4 per cent, on the capital invested.
July 20. The final course for the Waterloo Cup was run to-day, and was won by Rhodnathe, Lesrerdemain being the runner-up.
July 21. Messrs 0. S. Ross and Co, of this city, repert sales of New Zealand timber ex Devon port, Maria Virginia, and Circe as follow : — Kauri pine (average prices per 100 ft super) : hewn logs, 14s 6d ; sawn flitches, 14s 6d ; dressed boards, $in, 3s 2d (Average prices per 100 ft Jineal) : Tand G flooring, 6 by g, 7s ; 4 by I£, 7s 6d ; 4 by lin, 4s ; white pine sawn boards, 9s 3d ; dressed boards, 10s per 100 ft super. Demand for timber has slackened, and market weak. At the Victoria Racing Club Winter Steeplechase meeting to-day, the Grand National Hurdle race was won by Dizzy, and the Grand National Steeplechase by Blackthorn. During the latter race one horse, Chrysalis, fell, killing the jockey, M'lnnes. July 23.
The P. and O. Company's s.s. Cathay arrived this morning with the inward Suez mail, dated London, June 15.
The prisoner Burns has been found guilty of the murder of Michael Quinlivan at Wickliff c in 1880, and has been remanded for senten 6e. SYDNEY, July 19. At a banquet given to the Ministry last night at Wollongong, Mr Stewart, the Premier, in the course of his speech in replying to the toast of the evening, promised to introduce a Land Act Amendment Bill early next session. He also stated that the Ministry would stand or fall by that measure. The Premier announced that the Government would submit, an extensive railway policy of a more comprehensive • character than any yet placed before Parliament.

July 21. Intelligence has reached here from New Caledonia that the French Government recently granted to Mr Adolfus Oppenheimer, of Auckland, the right and monopoly for 10 years to dig for and export kauri gum from New Caledonia. During Mr Oppenheimer's stay in New Caledonia lately, a French ship of war was placed at his disposal to explore parts of the Colony. He discovered two extensive gumfields yielding excellent hard kauri, and also several rich chrome and cobalt mines. He obtained concessions for working the same. Adelaide, July 20. Wheat is steady at ss. Town flour, per ton, £11 5s to £11 10s ; country brands, £10 5s to £10 10s. Freights on wool to London— greasy, f d per 1b ; scoured, f d.
The Tuepeka Borough Council are about to plant trees in one of the streets of the borough, Mr J. J. Woods having kindly offered some Lombardy poplars to the Council for the purpose.
