The Canterbury Team.

The following is the Canterbury teamV-^ From the Chnstchurch F.C.— E. Cotterill F W. Anderson, F. H. Anderson, T. D. Hannan! G. H. HelmoreW.V Million and F. Archer Ravens F^.-H. F. Fam East Christchurch l I.C.— R.Blanchard and H.H. Parsons. North ham F.C.— J. M'Lean. Of the capabilities of this team I am not very favourably impressed.. The forwards are good, but the backs are not, and I think Otago ought to have no difficulty in winning the match of 1883. However, the Solection Committee have been complimented for their choice, and the chosen Fifteen may. prove a ; tougher lot than many think they are. , The backs are in rotation as follows :— E. Cotterill • , ; H. Farr and C. D'Auvergne; T. D. Harman| A. Anderson, and G. Helmore. The.Selection Committee chose two emergencies, but they, deemed it better not to append them to. the 1 list, and will hand the names to the captain of the team, leaving, him discretion to pick the one best fitted to fill the particular vacancy that may arise. What surprises me most- is ' jthat out of the, crack Canterbury,, team— East , Christchurch — only two players are good enough to appear in the Interprovincial ranks. , I heard of one player who has so much money on the Otago team "that he does not/ deem it advisable to play against them. Are there ' others m the same box ?. t I hope not. If so football will degenerate rapidly. Never mind the betting, but go in for the honour, say I. Leave mercenary motives r in the background."
