Fatal Accident at Reefton.

(KKOM OUII OWN CORRESPONDENT.)

Reefton, April 1(1 th.

A very melancholy accident, which ended fatally, happened this afternoon on one of the sections of the Murray Creek road now being constructed by contract for the (Jonnty Council. It appears that a number of men tried to move a big log from a sidling clear of the line of road, but after repeated trials did not succeed. The rest of the men then left the place, except Johannes Zanstra, who said he would cut away some saplings and try to move the log. The other men did not notice or see how it happened, being by that time some distance away. On looking up towards the place they saw that the log had moved, and on going up to the spot found the unfortunate man quite dead, the log having evidently rolled over and killed him on the spot. The unfortunate man was about 38 years of age, and a quiet, steady, sober, and industrious man ; a native of Holland ; and leaves a wife and two children wholly unprovided for. He was a comparatively late arrival here, having come from Canterbury some 10 or 1.5 months ago. He had some time since negotiated for a Government policy on his life, but, unfortunately, did not follow it up.
