A COTTAGE GARDEN PRIZE.

Tho North Otago Times of the 3rd says :— At the meeting of the committee of the Horticultural Society last night, the advisability of giving prizes for cottagegardenswas brought up, and it was decided to give £3 Us as a first prize, £2 2s as a second priso »J>ndJ3l lsasa third prize. No entrance feu will be charged those who compete for- these prizes, and it is expected that thore will be a large entry of competitors. On the last occasion on whioh the society gave prizes for cottage gardens there were 10 entries, but this year there will no doubt be a large increase on this number. It was also decided that- a number of prizes be given to children attending school far plants, &c, grown by themselves and, verified to by the teachers,

This is a now departure in the efforts of the society to encourage floriculture, and one that is highly commendable. The committee have also passed the following resolution :— ' There shall be two classes at the society's exhibitions to be defined as ama teurs and gardeners. Any person cultivating his own garden or employing only occasional assistance Khali be considered an amateur, provided he does not grow tor sale or sell products similar to those he exhibits. A cottager shall be considered as one who cultivates his own garden without any assistance outside of his own family, and does not grow products for sale. Persons exhibiting in either class can only exhibit in one class.— ln case of disqualification the judges are to state in writing their reason for disqualifying any exhibit. — The show committee shall have power to reject any exhibits offered for competition which they may deem unworthy of reception. 1
