SANDYMOUNT. (FROM A CORRESPONDENT.)

July 4th.

Wo have had our share of wot weather during the past week, and as a matter of oourse our roads are in a perfect puddle. 'Jhe Peninsula, at no timo very dry, is now like a veritable sponge, for wherever you place your foot on the soil it sinks, and water oozes Up immediately. There is not -much to record this week save the death of Mr David Welpeis, who settled here many years ago, aud who from his genial a:id kindly disposition gained many friends. His happy jokes and merry laugh will be remembered here for many a Hearing that Mr W. Riddel', an enterprising setter, had erected a water-engine at considerable expense, I called upon him, and requosted that he would show me the maohine and ex ( lain its wording- This he did with his usual good-nature, and informed mo further that tho engine was manufactured by Mr fetors, of South Dunedio, under whose immodiate supervision the machinery was ereetid. The water which drives the engine id brought in pipes from a pond on the hillside, which is 70 feet above the level of tho engine ; and although the wholo thing might ba Btowed aa ay in a butter box, yet it is sufficiently powerful to driVe his churn, cut his chaff, and even thrash his oats. Mr W. Bid^ell deservo3 great credit for his enterprise in thus erecting the first waterengine in the district.
