HAWEA AND WANAKA. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.)

Pembroke, July let.

A grand conceit and ball in ■ aid of the Pomb'roke school funds will be held in Mrs Russell's commodious wool-shed. Pembroke, on the eve of the 14th of July. Judging by the interest already displayed in the pro Hminary arrangements, the affair should prove a great success, as musical talent, 'tis said, will be forthcoming from Cromwell.

The autumn-sown crops are in n thriving coniition throughout the whole district, and are really looking well, although too much rain has fallen of lato. The acreage under cultivation on somo of the farms nearly doubles that of last year. Should the ensuing spring prove propitious for the growtli of cereals, the yield from the Upper Clutha Valley will be much greater than heretofore. The rivor is in capital rafting condition. Judging by the 'quantity of timbsr that cum bera the beach at Pembroke and the shore at it' source, the townships down country must bo attaining considerable proportions. 'The schooners Nun and Eureka are now bueily engaged in the timbe trade. The last-named, besides her loading 1 , towed down three largo rafts from the Matukituki. The captain had taken advantage of a slant of wind and sately landed about 18,000 fset of assorted timber at the river's mouth. Fearful northerly gales swept o'er the district during the early part of last week, attended with torrents of win. At present the sky, is cloudless, and the weather serene and beautiful.
