Steamship Company at Suez telegraphs with reference to the preparations 'which it is alleged have been made by the Egyptians for rendering ths Suez Canal impassable, that no danger is at the present time anticipated for steamers using that route. The cargo of hewn kauri timber, ex ship Alcestis, from Whangaroa, was sold at auction to-day, and realised li)s 9d per thousand. The firm of Elder, Smith, and Co., wool and produce merchants, is to be converted into a company, with a capital of § £200,000, The shares have been fully subscribed. July Ist. The Victorian revenue for the past quarter amounted to £1,381,000, being an increase of £46,000 compared with the : June quarter of last year. The revenue for the year 1881-S2 amounted to £5,588,000, being an increase of £374,000 compared with previous year. Tho following increases are shown by the returns during the year : — Customs, £221,000 ; excise, £€8,000; railways, £137,000 ; stamps, £1(5,000. Territorial revenue shows a decrease of £10,000 compared with 1880-81. July 3rd. The entries for the Grand International Champion Ploughing Contest, which takes place on the 20th and 27th jnst., under the auspices of the National Agricultural Society of "Victoria, were published to-day. For the -Single-furrow match (first prize L 105) there are f>2 entries, and for the double-furrow match (L 100) 30 entries. All the Australa&ian Colonies will be represented at the contest, including "New Zealand, from whenca two entries have been received. July 4th. A committee has been formed for the pnrj3ose of organising a banquet to Sir Henry Parkes on his return from England. At a meeting of coal- miners who are on strike at Newcastle, to-day^ delegates wore appointed and authorised to sign a bond for the seleetion-of arbitrators to generally determine their disagreement with the colliery manager.
