AUSTRALIAN.,
As Lohengrin was twice nominated for the Oaulfield Cvp — once in Melbourne and once in Sydney— the actual entry for that race is reduced to 132 horses. Instructions to enter four New Zealand horses unfortunately arrived a day too late, as also did the nomination of Hypatia from West Maitland. The New Zealand nominations were probably some of Messrs Robinson and Lance's horses.
iThe Australian Jockey Club have decided not to adopt the new rules proposed at the conference of the clubs some months ago. Mr Clibborn ,was not lucky enough to have 100 entries for the Metropolitan Stakes after all, for Willow Wren turns out to be one name, instead of two ; consequently the total is only 09. It is hard lines for the worthy secretary of the A.J.C., for ten minutes after the entries closed there arrived the entry of Mr E. Hay's Friar.
The Hon. E. K. Cox has experienced another slice of ill luck, for since the imported sire Ohandos died, he has lost a couple of foals, one being by Chandos from Sweet William's dam. I believe the deer were the cause of the accidents, and as a stag killed Lord of Linne some time ago, I think Mr Cox will bogin to think that they are a somewhat expensive luxury. Except in double events there has been little done this week in the way of wagering on the great events of the spring. For the V.R.O. Derby Segonhoe is a decided favourite, and his friends take as short a price as 9 to 2, and 1000 to 40 has been accepted that he wins both Derby and Cup.
