Land Board.

The ordinary meeting of the Land Board wap held on Wednesday.- Present— Messrs J. P. Maitland (chief commissioner), H. Clark, J. Duncan, R. Stout, and J. B. Bradshaw.

The minutes of last meeting having been confirmed, the following matters were dealt with : —

run 249. A proposal was received from Mr W/ Fraser to exchange the northern portion • Run 249 for an equal area of Run 325b, south of the Fraser River. — Referred to the Chief Surveyor.

WAIKAKA.

Mr C. J. Aldridge, on behalf of Mr D. Gordon and Messrs Swan and M'Phail, applied for the transfer of a lignite license, No. 49, for part of section 29, block VI, Waikaka, from Mr D. Gordon to Messrs Swan and M'Phail ; also, for permission to construct a tramway through the reserve to the railway -line. — Transfer approved, subject to arrears being paid ; application as to laying down tramway referred to Ranger Hughan to arrange as to route.

An application was made by Mr John Huffman for a license to occupy a portion of a coal reserve, section 18, block I, Waikaka district. — Referred to the ranger to report as to the necessity of granting the license.

WAIHEMO.

A memorandum was received from tho Under-secretary of Crown Lands intimating that it was not considered desirable to withdraw section 3, block VII, Waihemo, from the deferred-payment system until the amended Land Bill has been before Parliament.

DEFERRED-PAYMENT LEASES.J The following applications for leave to purchase under deferred-payment leases were approved: — Cornelius O'Hara, for leave to purchase section 10, block 11, Otama ; Andrew Young, sections 1, 3, and 4, block 111, Teviot ; Francis Woodhouse, sections 5, 6, 10, and 8, block 111, Teviot.

WAIPORI.

The Undersecretary for Crown Lands, referring to the late recommendation of tho Board in reference to the Waipori land, intimated by letter that there is no power to withdraw land opened as pastoral land on deferred payments from that system^ and also suggesting that block V, Waipori district, be withdrawn from sale, being auriferous.

FORFEITURE OF RUNS.

A telegram was received from the Secretary of Crown Lands suggesting that action be taken to declare Runs 418 (Steele's) and 430 (Crew's) forfeited, to enable the Rabbit Department to clear the rabbits off the same. — It was resolved that notices should be forwarded to the rabbit inspector for service.

EARNSLAW.

Mr George Cockburn, by his solicitor, Mr W. Turton, aj)plied to purchase sections 36 and 35, block I, Earnslaw district, under clause 164 of the Land Act, his present area being insufficient to meet his wants.— Application declined, as it could not be granted undor section 164. Applicant to be informed that the Land Act is being amended in a direction which will probably afford him an opportunity of adding to his present holding.

WANAKA.

Mr Joseph Parma applied for a license for seven years of Ram Island, Lake Wanaka, and agreed, on condition that his application was granted, to pay the back rents due by the previous licensee,— The Board_ resolved to transfer tho license upon the applicant paying arrears and forwarding the license with transfer of the same from Cotter's trustees.

AGRIOuXTTJRAL LEASES. The following Applications to purchase Under, the agricultural lease system weve adjourned for a week:-Janu» Gall, aechons il .and 2, Mock Yin, and section 1, block VII Waikaia: Peter Henderson, section 26, block Vll, Shotover ; Robert Pritchard, section 6, blook VIII, Shotovw. SHOTOVER. The Board resolved to recommend Mr Patrick Kerin's application to purchase section 52, Hock VIII, Shotover, for the Governor'a approval. TEVIOT. Mr J Mouat, on behalf of the executors of John Mackay, applied for a transfer of deferred-payment license No. 529, section 5, block IX, Teviot district, to G urge Forbes Mackay, of Roxburgh.~The Board directed that notice of the proposed transfer should be civen in terms of the Act. MACRAES. "Mr W. E. Griffin forwarded a resolution, adopted by a public meeting at Macraes, suggesting that, in dealing with the runs, the land suitable for agricultural purposes be surveyed into sections of from 200 to 320 acres, and that deferred-payment blocks be from 1000 to 2000 acres. TUAPEKA WEST. From the District Land Officer at Lawrence a lotter was received valuing at £2 per acre section 63, block VI, and section 15, block ill, Tuapeka'West, applied for by John Hogg. It was resolved that the previous resolution of the Board be rescinded, and application to purchase refused, representations having been made to the Board that the mining reserve is still required for mining purposes. APPLICATION FOR REHEARING. Messrs Connell and Moodie, on behalf of Mr B. Haworth, applied for a rehearing of the application by Messrs Malaghan and Bridge, as trustees of Mr Haworth, to purchase certain land. , „ Mr Connell appeared to support, and Mr Harvey to oppose the application. As negotiations between the parties were pending, the matter was allowed to stand at the bottom of the list, and subsequently Mr Oonnell announced that a settlement had been arrived at, and withdrew the application.
