KUROW.
(FROM OUR OWN CJOiUIKtiFONDIfHT.)
June 26th.
During the swollen stato of tho river from the heavy rainfall of the previous 48 hours a part of the embank. • ment connecting 1 tho two halves of thu Upper Waitaki bridge was, on Wednesday r;hr t (21st), carried away SVitn no great surpiide, thercf> ro, wav it that we saw a special train, conveying the railway officials, make its appearance on the following morning. I hough truffle across tho bridge is in consequence mispcndod fora few days, footpasseogers are still able to puuh to and fro.
While on the subject of railway affairs, I may mention that there is on foot a movement which has for its object the extension of tho telegraph to our towuship. Duntroon has, I believe, for some little timo enjoyed tho benefits accruing from the existence of a telegraph station close at hand ; and there appe.r* t» be no valid reason why we should not be allowed to share in her good fortune.
Thanks to the exertions of the Key. P. S. Hay, M.A., on alternate Sunday evenings, at 0.30, a service has been held in our bchoolroom. Coming, as Mr Hay does, from a long distance, it is to be regretted that members of our community do not bettersecoud his efforts by attending these services in greater numbers and more frequently. Our school has now. been open for upwards of four months. Mr Petrie's annual visit of inspection took place about three weeks ago. 1 understand that he was favourably impressed with the work that is carried on there. The Committee are not unmindful of the master's interests. Through their instrumentality the section upon which the schoojhoueo is built has been gratuitously ploughed, prior to the e< action of a substantial fence round the same. As is customary in most places at this perjod of the year, the Bchool has been clo.ed for a week.
